Chapter 8 - The Echoes of Disgrace

Back in the city, the Vance household had become a tomb of silence and legal notices. The utilities had been temporarily downgraded to avoid immediate disconnection, and the luxury cars in the driveway had already been repossessed by the bank.
Helen Vance sat at the kitchen table, staring blankly at a pile of unpaid bills. Her phone lay beside her, completely silent. No one called anymore. No one dropped by. The friends who had once eaten caviar at her table and praised her brilliant, beautiful daughters had vanished like smoke in the wind.
Alyssa walked into the kitchen, wearing a stained sweatshirt and sweatpants, her hair unwashed, her face pale and sunken. She looked like a ghost haunting the ruins of her own vanity.
"Mom," Alyssa whispered, her voice cracking. "What are we going to do? The bank sent another notice. They're going to foreclose on the house by the end of the month."
Helen didn't look up from the bills. For the first time in her life, the polished, manipulative facade had completely shattered, leaving behind a bitter, broken woman.

"We're going to lose everything, Alyssa," Helen said, her voice dead and hollow. "And we did it to ourselves."
Alyssa dropped her head into her hands and began to weep—not with the theatrical, manipulative tears she used to get her way, but with the raw, agonizing grief of someone who finally realized she had traded her family's only genuine protector for a crown made of glass.
