Chapter 7 - The Night Mateo Was Born, Adriano Gave Bella the One Thing She Had Asked Him for Years Earlier: FreedomAfter Mateo's birth, life changed.

Bella's world became smaller in the best way.

Feedings.

Diapers.

Architecture drawings.

Sleepless nights.

Adriano discovered that babies did not care about reputation.

Mateo cried during million-dollar meetings.

He spit up on designer suits.

He fell asleep only when Adriano walked around the room.

For once, Adriano did not mind being interrupted.

He loved it.

Bella watched.

One evening she asked:

“Do you still miss the old life?”

Adriano thought.

“Sometimes.”

“The power?”

“No.”

“The money?”

“Sometimes.”

She smiled.

“The fear?”

“No.”

That answer mattered.

Six months later, Adriano finalized the sale of the remaining properties connected to illegal operations.

The proceeds were placed into victim compensation and employee protection funds.

A few legitimate companies were transferred into independent ownership.

He walked away from organized crime entirely.

It was dangerous.

But possible.

He became a businessman.

Not a Don.

Not a king.

Just a man who had finally decided his family mattered more than his image.

One night, he found Bella working late.

“You should sleep.”

She looked up.

“You sound like my doctor.”

“Your doctor is smarter than me.”

“That's a low bar.”

He smiled.

She shut the laptop.

“Adriano?”

“Yes?”

“I'm proud of you.”

His face changed.

He looked almost more vulnerable than he had on the day Mateo was born.

“Thank you.”

“But I'm not ready to be your wife again.”

“I know.”

She took his hand.

“I may never be.”

“I know.”

“And I don't want you waiting for permission.”

“I'm not.”

She looked surprised.

“What are you doing?”

“Being your son's father.”

She smiled.

“That answer I like.”

He kissed Mateo's forehead.

Then left.

Bella watched him go.

The first time she had left him, she thought freedom meant never looking back.

Now she understood.

Freedom meant being able to look back without wanting to return to the same pain.

She could love Adriano.

She could forgive parts of him.

And still demand something different.

May you like

He did not fight her on it.

That was how she knew he had changed.
