Chapter 4 - Adriano Finally Confessed Why He Had Betrayed Bella—and the Reason Was Worse Than InfidelityAfter the shooting, Bella refused to sleep.

Adriano sat across the room.
Marco reinforced security.
Luca checked every vehicle.
Michael called federal contacts.
But Bella kept thinking about one sentence.
I should have been protecting you all along.
At dawn, she asked Adriano:
“Why Bianca?”
He stared at the floor.
“I don't know how to answer that without sounding like an excuse.”
“Try.”
“She was convenient.”
Bella flinched.
He continued.
“She admired the world I built.”
“And I didn't?”
“You challenged it.”
“That isn't the same thing.”
“I know.”
He looked at her.
“I was angry.”
“At me?”
“At everything.”
Bella crossed her arms.
“My work.”
“Your work reminded me that there was a life outside the empire.”
She stared.
“And that scared you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew if you kept growing, one day you would leave.”
Bella felt tears burn her eyes.
“So you betrayed me before I could abandon you.”
Adriano closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The honesty hurt more than denial.
But it was the first honest thing he had given her.
“I thought if I kept you busy, you'd stay.”
Bella shook her head.
“You didn't keep me.”
“You're right.”
“I made a life around you because I loved you.”
“I know.”
“And instead of loving me enough to let me have my own life, you made my world smaller.”
“I know.”
She turned away.
“I'm sorry.”
He said it quietly.
Bella looked at him.
“Sorry doesn't rebuild trust.”
“I know.”
“What does?”
“Time.”
She nodded.
“For once, you're right.”
That day, federal investigators arrived.
Bella provided her evidence.
Adriano provided his.
Richard disappeared.
Bianca's father attempted to flee.
The network began collapsing.
But one problem remained.
The ledger contained names that could trigger a violent power vacuum.
If word spread inside the organization, rival factions might attack.
Adriano had a choice.
Protect the empire.
Or dismantle it.
Bella watched him struggle.
“You don't have to save the empire.”
He looked at her.
“I know.”
“Save your family.”
He nodded.
That evening, Adriano called a private meeting.
Every senior Moretti leader attended.
He stood at the center of the ballroom.
For years, he had been feared.
Tonight, he looked exhausted.
“Things are changing.”
No one spoke.
“We are cooperating with authorities.”
Murmurs.
Adriano raised his hand.
“This family will not protect criminals.”
Richard's allies shifted.
“We will preserve legitimate businesses.”
A man shouted.
“And the rest?”
Adriano looked at Bella.
Then back at the room.
“The rest ends.”
Silence.
He announced that illegal operations would be dismantled.
Assets tied to criminal activity would be surrendered.
Employees not involved would be protected.
Family trusts would be separated from business control.
Bella watched.
He was giving away part of his empire.
Not because he had to.
Because he was finally willing to lose power to protect people.
After the meeting, he found Bella on the balcony.
“You were right.”
She looked at him.
“About what?”
“I thought the empire made me strong.”
“And?”
“It made me afraid.”
She looked away.
“I don't want you to become a saint, Adriano.”
“Good.”
“I want you to become honest.”
“I can do that.”
“Can you?”
He smiled sadly.
“I'm trying.”
Then Bella felt the baby move.
She placed his hand over her stomach.
Adriano froze.
“Is that him?”
She nodded.
Their son kicked again.
Adriano's eyes filled.
Bella whispered:
“He doesn't know what any of this means.”
“I know.”
“Let's make sure he never has to.”
Adriano nodded.
That became their shared mission.
Not saving the Moretti empire.
May you like
Saving the child.
And perhaps, someday, themselves.
