Chapter 3 - The Threat Against Bella's Brother Forced Her to Return to Chicago—But She Came Back With a Secret Adriano Never ExpectedBella refused to panic.

Fear was useful only when it sharpened decisions.

Luca checked every entrance.

Michael contacted federal authorities.

The temporary apartment was abandoned within twenty minutes.

By sunset, they were moving again.

But the threat remained.

Whoever had sent the message knew about the ledger.

They knew about Luca.

And they knew Bella was pregnant.

That last detail was especially terrifying.

At midnight, Bella received another message.

COME BACK TO CHICAGO.

NO ONE NEEDS TO DIE.

She deleted it.

Then stared at the screen.

“Who knew you had the ledger?” Luca asked.

“Adriano.”

“Who knew you had copies?”

“My accountant.”

“Anyone else?”

Bella shook her head.

“No.”

“Then somebody inside the investigation leaked it.”

Michael looked up.

“Or somebody close to your husband.”

Bella thought of Bianca.

Then of Richard Moretti.

Adriano's uncle.

A man who had spent years smiling at charity dinners while quietly building his own faction within the family.

Richard had always hated Bella.

Not because she was his nephew's wife.

Because she was the only person Adriano listened to.

And Bella had slowly removed Richard's influence from the foundation.

She had blocked him from using family donations to fund properties he privately controlled.

She had called auditors.

She had corrected records.

She had become a problem.

Maybe this was bigger than Adriano.

Maybe Richard had been waiting for the right moment.

At 6:00 the following morning, Bella made the decision she had sworn she would never make.

She returned to Chicago.

Not to go home.

To confront Richard.

She called Adriano first.

“I know who is behind this.”

“What?”

“Your uncle.”

Silence.

“You're sure?”

“I found his name in the ledger.”

Adriano's breathing changed.

“What did he do?”

“Ask him.”

“Bella…”

“I'll meet you at the old hotel.”

“When?”

“Noon.”

“Come alone.”

She laughed.

“You know me better than that.”

She arrived with Luca and Michael.

Adriano arrived with Marco.

The ballroom was empty.

The same ballroom where they had first met.

Bella stood beneath the restored ceiling.

Adriano walked toward her.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then he looked at her stomach.

“How is the baby?”

“Healthy.”

He closed his eyes.

“Thank God.”

Bella's expression hardened.

“You don't get to perform concern after everything.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

He looked at her.

“I know I hurt you.”

“You did more than hurt me.”

“I know.”

“You used my family's property.”

“I was trying to protect it.”

“You put it at risk.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

He didn't answer.

She stepped closer.

“That's the problem.”

She held out a copy of the ledger.

“Tell me why Richard Moretti received twelve million dollars.”

Adriano stared.

“I didn't know.”

“Tell me why Bianca's family received eight.”

“I didn't authorize that.”

“Tell me why your signature appears.”

His jaw tightened.

“I didn't sign it.”

Bella's heart stopped.

“What?”

Adriano stared at the document.

“That isn't my signature.”

Bella looked closer.

She knew signatures.

She had studied the original documents.

The forgery was sophisticated.

But now she noticed a small difference.

The pressure on the final letter.

The wrong angle.

The stroke was slightly too clean.

Someone had forged Adriano's name.

“What about the other transfers?”

“Some are mine.”

“And others?”

“I don't know.”

Bella stared at him.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“I expect you to investigate.”

That surprised her.

Adriano continued.

“You were right about one thing.”

“What?”

“I built an empire where everyone learned to hide things.”

His voice lowered.

“Including me.”

Bella said nothing.

“I was afraid of losing control.”

“You already lost it.”

“I know.”

Silence.

Then Adriano said something she didn't expect.

“If you disappear again, I'll let you.”

Bella stared.

“I won't send anyone.”

“Why?”

“Because if I force you to stay, I'll prove everything you've ever believed about me.”

Her eyes filled.

But she did not forgive him.

Not yet.

She simply nodded.

“Then help me expose Richard.”

He looked at her.

“I'm in.”

By evening, they had formed an alliance neither of them wanted.

Bella knew the financial structure.

Adriano knew the family.

Luca knew Bella.

Marco knew security.

Michael knew the law.

Together, they began reconstructing the true network.

The pattern was horrifying.

Richard had been siphoning funds for years.

But someone else had been assisting him.

Bianca's father.

The scheme involved property inflation, false contracts and hidden political donations.

Adriano had participated in some transactions because he believed they protected the family.

He had not known the true destination of the money.

Bella realized something painful.

Adriano had been both guilty and manipulated.

That did not excuse him.

It complicated him.

Then they found the real objective.

Richard wasn't trying to steal the empire.

He was trying to force Adriano into a legal crisis.

Once Adriano was arrested, Richard would invoke a succession clause and seize control of several family businesses.

Bella's unborn child would become a key beneficiary.

Which meant Richard needed her under control.

Or gone.

Bella stared at the papers.

“He needs my son.”

Adriano's face changed.

“He'll never get near him.”

It was the first time Bella had heard something in his voice that sounded like pure fear.

Not for himself.

For their child.

That night, Adriano drove Bella to a secure property outside Chicago.

She refused to stay at the Moretti estate.

He did not argue.

“I'll sleep downstairs,” he said.

“You're not sleeping here.”

“Then I'll sleep outside.”

She stared.

“You're impossible.”

“Apparently.”

For the first time in weeks, she almost smiled.

Then the lights went out.

Security alarms triggered.

A gunshot shattered the window.

Adriano threw himself in front of Bella.

Marco returned fire.

Luca pulled Bella behind a wall.

The attack lasted forty seconds.

Then silence.

Adriano looked at Bella.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“The baby?”

“Fine.”

He exhaled.

Bella looked at him.

“You saved me.”

He stared at her.

“I should have been protecting you all along.”

She did not answer.

Because she knew something had changed.

May you like

Not enough.

But something.
