Chapter 5 - The Baby's Heartbeat Changed Adriano's Decision, and for the First Time He Was Willing to Destroy His Own Empire to Save His FamilyThe investigation expanded.

Richard was found hiding in a private residence outside Milwaukee.
Bianca's father was arrested at the airport.
Several Moretti executives cooperated.
Others disappeared.
Adriano spent weeks dismantling the structure he had spent a decade building.
The first thing he sold was the private security fleet.
The second was the offshore property network.
The third was an entire chain of shell companies.
People called him weak.
Bella called it necessary.
They moved into a secure but modest house outside the city.
Bella resumed limited architectural work.
She refused to touch Moretti contracts.
Adriano respected that.
He also learned how to cook.
Badly.
One evening, he burned pasta.
Bella stood in the doorway.
“What is that?”
“Dinner.”
“That's charcoal.”
“I was trying.”
She laughed.
Adriano smiled.
“I've missed that.”
“What?”
“You laughing at me.”
She shook her head.
“Don't get used to it.”
“I won't.”
Months passed.
Bella became visibly pregnant.
Adriano attended every doctor's appointment.
He never assumed he was invited.
He asked.
Sometimes she said yes.
Sometimes no.
He accepted both.
Then one appointment changed everything.
The doctor found a small concern with the baby's heartbeat.
Nothing catastrophic.
But enough to require monitoring.
Adriano went pale.
Bella noticed.
“You're scared.”
“Yes.”
“So am I.”
He took her hand.
“We'll be okay.”
She squeezed his fingers.
“That is the first time you've said something you didn't say to control the outcome.”
He looked at her.
“What did I say before?”
“You said everything would be fine.”
“And now?”
“Now you admit you're scared.”
He nodded.
“I am.”
She leaned against him.
“So am I.”
For the first time, fear brought them closer instead of creating distance.
The baby's condition stabilized.
But the scare changed Adriano.
He created a legal trust for their son.
Bella controlled it.
Not him.
He signed the papers voluntarily.
She looked at him.
“You don't need to do this.”
“I want to.”
“You trust me?”
“With everything.”
She stared.
The man she had once loved had returned in pieces.
Not the dangerous billionaire.
Not the Don.
Just Adriano.
The man beneath the title.
The man who had once laughed in a burned hotel.
One night he said:
“I want to ask something.”
Bella looked up.
“What?”
“If we had never met through the empire, would you have loved me?”
She thought.
“Yes.”
He smiled.
“Then I destroyed the wrong thing.”
“What do you mean?”
“I spent years trying to build something powerful enough to guarantee you would never leave.”
He touched her hand.
“And I destroyed the relationship that would have made you want to stay.”
Bella cried.
She did not forgive him that night.
But she kissed him.
Once.
May you like
Briefly.
Like a promise that someday there might be another beginning.
