Chapter 2 - By Dawn, Adriano Discovered His Pregnant Wife Had Vanished—But the Missing Folder in His Office Frightened Him More Than Her AbsenceAt 5:46 in the morning, Adriano Moretti woke in the presidential suite of the Lake Michigan Grand Hotel with a headache and a strange sense of irritation.

The gala had ended nearly two hours earlier.
Bianca was asleep in the adjoining room.
His tuxedo jacket lay over a chair.
One cufflink was missing.
And Bella's half of the bed was empty.
He stared at the ceiling.
For a moment, he convinced himself she was in the bathroom.
Then he remembered the diamond ring.
He sat upright.
“Isabella?”
Nothing.
Adriano stepped into the hall.
His head of security, Marco, was already waiting.
“Sir.”
“Where's my wife?”
Marco hesitated.
“She left.”
“When?”
“Shortly after midnight.”
“Where did she go?”
“We don't know.”
Adriano's expression changed.
“Find her.”
“Yes, sir.”
He turned.
“Who was driving?”
“Mr. Luca Romano.”
Adriano froze.
“Luca was here?”
“No. He arrived later.”
“Later?”
“Twenty-five minutes after Mrs. Moretti left.”
Adriano felt something cold move through him.
He walked back into the suite.
His phone showed seven missed calls.
His mother.
His chief of security.
Two attorneys.
None of that mattered.
Bella was gone.
He called her.
Straight to voicemail.
Again.
Voicemail.
He threw the phone onto the bed.
Then he saw something.
The dressing room.
One suitcase missing.
Her passport.
Her private documents.
The jewelry box.
Gone.
Not all of it.
Only the things she would need.
She hadn't stormed out.
She had planned.
Adriano knew Bella.
A woman who planned did not leave impulsively.
He walked into his private office.
His safe was closed.
His desk looked untouched.
Then he noticed the drawer.
The drawer containing a black folder.
The master ledger.
He opened it.
Empty.
Adriano went completely still.
He called Marco.
“Seal the hotel.”
“Sir?”
“Every exit.”
“Why?”
“My wife took something.”
“What?”
Adriano stared at the empty drawer.
“The ledger.”
Marco's voice changed.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“Do you want us to find her?”
Adriano shut his eyes.
“Yes.”
Then another thought hit him.
“Without hurting her.”
Marco paused.
“Of course.”
Adriano hung up.
Across the city, Bella sat at a kitchen table with Luca and attorney Michael Reyes.
The master ledger copies were spread before them.
Reyes looked pale.
“Do you understand what you've brought me?”
“Yes.”
“This could put people in prison.”
“I know.”
“It could put you in danger.”
“I know.”
“And the federal government may ask how you obtained this.”
Bella looked down.
“Then I'll tell them.”
Reyes studied her.
“Are you prepared to testify against your husband?”
Bella looked at the ultrasound photograph.
Her voice was quiet.
“I am prepared to protect my son.”
Michael nodded.
“That isn't the same answer.”
“It is for me.”
At 7:12, Adriano entered his main office.
His CFO and chief attorney were waiting.
“You're sure she has the ledger?”
“Yes.”
“Then we have a problem.”
Adriano looked at them.
“No.”
The attorney shook his head.
“You don't understand.”
“She won't know how to use it.”
“She doesn't need to.”
He placed a document on the table.
“The information is enough.”
Adriano picked it up.
It was a copy of a single transaction.
Vespera Capital.
Thirty million dollars.
The beneficiary was listed as a foreign political intermediary.
Adriano's name was on the authorization.
He looked at the attorney.
“Is this real?”
“Yes.”
“Who copied it?”
“We don't know.”
Adriano's stomach dropped.
Bella had not merely taken a ledger.
She had taken a weapon.
And worse, she had probably copied it.
He looked at Marco.
“Find Luca.”
“We have people looking.”
“No.”
Adriano pulled out his phone.
“I'll find him myself.”
At 8:03, Bella received a call from an unknown number.
She answered.
“Isabella.”
She recognized Adriano's voice.
“Where are you?”
“Somewhere you can't reach.”
“I can find you.”
“You could.”
He went silent.
She continued.
“That's the problem with power. You begin believing access gives you ownership.”
“Bella, come home.”
“No.”
“You're pregnant.”
“I know.”
“You can't do this alone.”
She laughed softly.
“I've been doing it alone for years.”
“Who have you talked to?”
“That doesn't matter.”
“It matters to me.”
“You should have cared ninety-one days ago.”
Silence.
Adriano's voice changed.
“Did you take something?”
Bella closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“What?”
“Proof.”
He stopped breathing.
“How much do you know?”
“Enough.”
“Bella…”
“I know about Vespera.”
Silence.
“I know about the loan on the villa.”
Another silence.
“I know Bianca signed documents.”
Adriano's jaw tightened.
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
“I was protecting the family.”
She laughed without humor.
“You were protecting yourself.”
“That isn't true.”
“Then why is my property collateral?”
He said nothing.
“Why did you move money through shell companies?”
“I was preparing for a threat.”
“Against whom?”
“The government.”
Bella stared at the phone.
“Thank you.”
“What?”
“You just confirmed what I needed.”
Adriano realized his mistake.
“Bella.”
She hung up.
He called again.
No answer.
At 9:10, Bella's attorney filed a sealed legal notice.
At 9:12, federal investigators received copies of the evidence.
At 9:45, Adriano's bank froze two accounts.
At 10:02, the Moretti family's private banker called.
“Mr. Moretti, there has been a compliance issue.”
Adriano's eyes narrowed.
“What kind?”
“We are obligated to report certain transactions.”
“Since when?”
“Since this morning.”
He understood.
Bella had triggered the process.
Not by attacking him publicly.
By quietly activating legal safeguards.
She had built exits into every part of the plan.
Adriano sat down.
For years he had believed his empire survived because he controlled every variable.
Now the only person who truly understood the system had walked away.
And she had done it while carrying his child.
That afternoon, Bianca entered his office.
“We need to talk.”
Adriano looked at her.
“No.”
She froze.
“You don't understand.”
“I understand everything.”
“You think Bella is innocent?”
“I think you're finished.”
Bianca's face hardened.
“Excuse me?”
“You signed transfer documents.”
“You told me to.”
“I told you to review them.”
“You signed the authorizations.”
“No.”
Adriano pushed a document toward her.
Her signature.
She stared.
Then looked at him.
“You knew?”
“I knew enough.”
Bianca's face went pale.
“Adriano, you promised me—”
He interrupted.
“I promised you nothing.”
She walked backward.
“You're going to blame me.”
“No.”
He stood.
“I'm going to find out who used both of us.”
Bianca stared at him.
“You think Bella will forgive you?”
Adriano looked away.
“No.”
And that answer frightened him more than anything.
Because for the first time, he wasn't thinking about whether Bella would come home.
He was wondering whether he had become the kind of man she needed to escape.
That night, Bella moved to another location.
The baby's heartbeat was strong.
The doctor told her to rest.
She nodded.
After the appointment, she sat in her car with one hand on her stomach.
The baby kicked.
She smiled through tears.
“I'm sorry, little one.”
She looked at the city.
“I should have protected us sooner.”
Her phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
YOU HAVE THE LEDGER.
WE KNOW.
Bella stared.
Another message appeared.
YOU HAVE FORTY-EIGHT HOURS.
OR YOUR BROTHER DIES.
Her blood turned cold.
Luca was standing ten feet away.
He had seen her face.
“What happened?”
Bella handed him the phone.
Luca read the messages.
Then looked toward the dark parking lot.
“They know where we are.”
Bella placed one hand over her stomach.
“Then we move.”
This time, she wasn't running from Adriano.
May you like
She was running from the people who had been waiting for the empire to fracture.
And somewhere behind the scenes, someone had already decided that taking Bella alive would be easier than taking the ledger from her.
