Chapter 7 - EARNING HIS PLACE

"Yes, I am," Ethan said, his voice thick with deep, genuine shame.

"And I want you to know that yelling at your mom was the absolute worst thing I have ever done in my entire life."

Noah tilted his head, studying the billionaire carefully like a puzzle he was trying to solve.

"My Grandpa Richard said you were tricked by a really bad lady," Noah said matter-of-factly.

Ethan let out a wet, choked laugh, wiping a stray tear from his eye.

"Your Grandpa is a very wise man, but I should have been smarter," Ethan admitted honestly.

"I brought you a shovel for your fort," Ethan offered, holding out the cheap red plastic toy.

Noah took it cautiously, his face lighting up as he realized how much faster he could build with it.

"Do you know how to build a snow castle?" Noah asked, looking at Ethan with an invitation.

Ethan looked up at Hannah, his dark eyes silently begging for her permission to cross the line.

She let out a long breath, gave a small, almost invisible smile, and nodded once.

"I think I can learn if you teach me," Ethan said, following his son into the snow.

As winter slowly turned into early spring, Ethan became a quiet, steady, and reliable presence in their lives.

He didn't try to win Noah over by buying him expensive video games, designer clothes, or sports cars.

Instead, he sat at their small kitchen table for hours, patiently helping the boy with his second-grade math homework.

He attended the school's parent-teacher conferences, sitting proudly and attentively beside Hannah.

He learned through observation that Noah was violently allergic to strawberries and absolutely terrified of sleeping in the dark.

One rainy Thursday evening, Noah fell asleep on the living room couch while they were watching a superhero movie.

Ethan carefully scooped the growing boy up into his arms, marveling at how perfectly he fit against his chest.

Noah stirred slightly, wrapping his small, warm arms around Ethan’s neck seeking comfort.

"Night, Dad," the little boy mumbled in his sleep, pressing his face into Ethan's collarbone.

Ethan froze dead in his tracks in the middle of the dark hallway, his heart stopping completely in his chest.

He closed his eyes as hot, silent tears of overwhelming joy spilled down his face.
