Chapter 11 - The Ghost of the Past

The warm summer breeze gently swept across the massive, sprawling lawns of the Vitelli estate, carrying the sweet scent of blooming jasmine.

Marco stood perfectly still on the expansive stone balcony, a steaming cup of dark coffee resting comfortably in his large, scarred hand.

He watched with absolute, quiet adoration as Jenny chased a laughing, energetic Leo across the bright green grass below.

It had been six beautiful, incredibly peaceful months since Marco had completely dismantled his violent criminal empire.

His massive, terrifying wealth had been entirely transferred into legitimate, highly respected shipping and real estate companies.

He had promised Jenny that he would never return to the darkness, and he had kept that sacred vow with fierce, unwavering dedication.

But Marco knew deeply in his soul that a man does not simply walk away from the criminal underworld without leaving a dangerous, empty throne behind.

The heavy glass door behind him slid open with a soft, quiet click, instantly pulling Marco from his peaceful thoughts.

Dante stepped out onto the sunlit balcony, his usually calm and collected face twisted into a grim, deeply troubled expression.

Marco immediately felt a cold, familiar knot of dread slowly tighten in the absolute center of his chest.

Dante did not wear the relaxed, casual clothes of a legitimate businessman today; he was wearing his dark, tailored tactical suit.

"We have a massive, incredibly dangerous problem at the downtown shipping ports, Marco," Dante stated quietly, keeping his voice completely steady.

Marco slowly set his coffee cup down on the small iron table, his dark eyes instantly narrowing with sharp, calculating intelligence.

"I am a completely legitimate businessman now, Dante, which means we do not have underworld problems anymore," Marco replied firmly.

Dante shook his head slowly, handing Marco a thick, highly encrypted digital tablet that displayed a series of unauthorized cargo manifests.

"Silas Thorne just moved into the city, and he is aggressively taking over the entire vacuum you deliberately left behind," Dante explained grimly.

Silas Thorne was a ruthless, absolutely terrifying cartel leader from the West Coast, known for leaving a trail of horrific blood and fire wherever he went.

"Silas wants to aggressively use our clean, perfectly legitimate shipping routes to smuggle heavy military weapons into the city," Dante continued.

Marco stared at the digital manifests, a dangerous, deeply buried spark of his old, lethal rage slowly igniting in his dark eyes.

"He sent a heavily armed crew to the docks this morning, violently demanding that our foremen turn over the loading schedules," Dante added softly.

Marco looked back down at the green lawn, watching his beautiful future wife pick up her healthy, thriving son and spin him around in the bright sunlight.

He had completely promised Jenny that the violent, terrifying monster inside of him was permanently dead and buried.

But as he looked at the aggressive threat printed on the tablet screen, Marco realized that peace always came with a horrific, bloody price.

"Tell the dock workers to completely shut down all operations and go home immediately," Marco commanded, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal whisper.

"I am going to completely end this arrogant threat before it ever touches my family."
