Chapter 8 - The Mayor’s Office

Captain Landry did not go down without a fight.
When he realized I was ignoring him, he went straight to the top.
He called the Mayor of Westbridge, a man who was heavily funded by Brooke’s wealthy family.
I anticipated this move.
I walked into the Mayor's office just as Landry was finishing his desperate plea.
"Mr. Mayor, this federal agent is running a personal vendetta!" Landry shouted, pointing at me as I entered.
The Mayor frowned, looking at me sternly.
"Agent Vance, you have overstepped your jurisdiction," the Mayor declared.
"I am officially requesting that you be removed from this audit."
I calmly pulled a USB drive from my pocket and placed it on the Mayor's mahogany desk.
"That drive contains bank records proving Brooke’s father funneled fifty thousand dollars into your offshore campaign account last week," I stated.
The Mayor’s face turned ashen.
"It also contains the wiretap recordings of Captain Landry ordering his officers to commit perjury," I added.
Landry lunged toward the desk, trying to grab the USB drive.
I sidestepped him, twisting his arm behind his back and forcing him onto the expensive carpet.
"Assaulting a federal officer, Landry?" I asked, pressing my knee into his spine.
"Add that to the list of charges."
The Mayor sat frozen in his leather chair, absolutely terrified.
"You have two choices, Mr. Mayor," I said, keeping Landry pinned to the floor.
"You can cooperate with the DOJ and resign quietly, or you can go to federal prison with the Captain here."
The Mayor slowly raised his hands in surrender.
"I’ll resign," he whispered.

I pulled out a second pair of handcuffs and secured Landry.
