Chapter 12 - The Safehouse

The FBI safehouse was a fortified concrete structure hidden deep within the Appalachian Mountains.

It was entirely off the grid, surrounded by motion sensors and thermal cameras.

I settled my mother into the small, sterile bedroom, promising her that this nightmare would end soon.

She held my hand tightly, her eyes reflecting the trauma of the past six months.

I left her to rest and walked into the command center to monitor the perimeter feeds.

Agent Miller was already there, analyzing the digital footprint of Richard Sterling’s recent transactions.

He pulled up a surveillance photo from an airport in Miami, showing a tall man with a scarred face.

Miller identified the man as Anton Volkov, a ruthless mercenary known for making high-profile targets disappear.

Volkov had just boarded a private jet headed straight for our jurisdiction.

I felt a surge of adrenaline masking the deep exhaustion in my bones.

If Richard wanted to send a monster to kill my family, I would gladly become a bigger monster to stop him.

I unlocked the heavy weapons locker and began assembling my tactical rifle.

I loaded armor-piercing rounds into the magazines, my hands moving with practiced, deadly precision.

Miller watched me in silence, knowing better than to suggest I let someone else handle this.

This was deeply personal, and I was going to finish it.

The perimeter alarms suddenly began to blare, bathing the command center in pulsing red light.

The thermal cameras showed four heavily armed figures breaching the southern tree line.

Anton Volkov had found us.
