Chapter 5 - Brooke’s Mistake

Brooke made the fatal error of thinking she was untouchable.
At noon, she marched into the precinct with her high-priced defense attorney.
She demanded to file a harassment complaint against me, claiming I was intimidating her family.
I watched them approach the front desk from the glass window of the conference room.
I grabbed my file and walked out to the lobby.
"Mrs. Vance, I am so glad you came in," I said, smiling politely at Brooke's lawyer.
"My client is here to file a formal complaint regarding your unprofessional conduct," the lawyer stated aggressively.
"Before she does that, I need to ask her a few questions about her initial statement," I replied.
"You claimed on the night of the incident that no weapon was involved, correct?"
Brooke crossed her arms, looking at me with pure disdain.
"That is correct," Brooke sneered.
"Your mother simply fell into a table because she is clumsy and unhinged."
I pulled out the sworn statement she had signed the night of the arrest.
"So you are confirming, on the record, in front of a federal agent, that this statement is entirely truthful?" I pressed.
"Absolutely," Brooke snapped.
I nodded slowly, pulling the printed screenshot of the bodycam mirror reflection from my folder.
I held it up so both Brooke and her lawyer could see Arthur handing over the bloody baseball bat.
The color instantly drained from Brooke’s face.
Her lawyer snatched the paper from my hand, his eyes widening in horror.
"Don't say another word, Brooke," her lawyer commanded, instantly realizing they had walked into a trap.
"Too late," I said, pulling out a pair of federal handcuffs.

"Brooke Vance, you are under arrest for aggravated assault, destruction of evidence, and perjury."
Brooke began to scream as I clamped the steel around her wrists.
