Chapter 15 - The State Penitentiary

I needed leverage against Richard, and the only person who knew his financial secrets was his daughter.
Brooke had been sitting in the maximum-security wing of the state penitentiary for six months.
I walked through the bleak, echoing corridors of the prison, the heavy iron doors slamming shut behind me.
The warden escorted me to a specialized interrogation room, looking nervous in the presence of a federal agent.
The guards brought Brooke in, her wrists shackled to a waist chain.
She looked entirely different from the arrogant, glamorous woman she used to be.
Her hair was dull and unkempt, her orange jumpsuit hung loosely on her thin frame, and her eyes were hard.
Brooke glared at me, a venomous sneer curling her lips as she sat down across the metal table.
She asked if I had come to gloat, her voice raspy and devoid of its usual aristocratic arrogance.
I placed a photograph of Anton Volkov’s dead body on the table between us.
I watched the color drain from her face as she recognized her father’s favorite enforcer.
I told her that her father had escalated the war, and his failed assassination attempt had just sealed his fate.
I leaned forward, explaining that I was going to freeze every cent of Richard's hidden crypto fortune.
Brooke laughed bitterly, claiming her father was untouchable and that I would never find the digital keys.
I noticed a slight tremble in her hands, a microscopic tell that she was terrified.
She knew exactly where the keys were hidden, and her arrogance was going to be her undoing.
I stood up, leaving the photograph on the table.

I promised her that when I caught her father, I would make sure he was placed in a federal facility three thousand miles away.
She would never see him, or his money, ever again.
