Chapter 2 - The Fall of a Major

The flashing red and blue lights illuminated the grand driveway of the estate within ten minutes.
Four heavily armed police officers kicked open the front doors, weapons drawn.
When they entered the master bedroom, they found a decorated Army Major sobbing on his knees.
"Officers, thank God you are here!" Diane cried out, trying to play the victim.
"This woman assaulted my son and is holding us hostage!"
The lead officer looked at Margaret, who calmly reached into her pocket.
She pulled out her gold-plated Department of Defense Investigator badge and tossed it onto the bed.
"Colonel Margaret Carter, OIG," she announced, her voice carrying absolute authority.
"These two individuals have conspired to murder my pregnant daughter for a five-million-dollar insurance payout."
The officers looked at Olivia’s heavily bruised arms, her swollen wrist, and her tear-stained face.
Then, Margaret handed them the audio recorder.
The lead officer listened to the tape for exactly thirty seconds before pulling out his handcuffs.
"Major Ethan Brooks, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder and aggravated domestic assault," the officer declared.
Ethan fought against the cuffs, his military composure completely shattered.
"Do you know who I am?" he screamed, spit flying from his mouth.
"I am a decorated officer, this will ruin my career!"
Margaret walked right up to his face, her eyes as cold as absolute ice.
"Your career is dead, Ethan," she whispered.
"And by tomorrow morning, you will be the shame of the entire United States Army."
The police dragged him out, leaving Diane trembling against the bedroom wall.

"Please, Olivia, I am going to be a grandmother," Diane begged pathetically.
"Arrest her too," Olivia said, turning her face away in disgust.
