My mother lifted the blanket over my pregnancy... and discovered why my husband wanted no one to see me again.
Margaret’s thumb hovered over the glowing screen of her cell phone.
Ethan lunged forward with a desperate, animalistic grunt.
"You are not calling anyone!" he shouted, reaching for the device.
Margaret simply stepped to the side with the grace of a trained soldier.
She effortlessly grabbed his extending wrist, twisted it backward, and pinned his arm against his own back.
Ethan cried out in pain as he crashed to his knees on the hardwood floor.
Diane shrieked, dropping her expensive designer handbag.
"Let go of my son, you crazy woman!" she screamed.
Margaret kept her boot planted firmly near Ethan’s spine.
"I spent twenty-five years interrogating terrorists and traitors, Diane," Margaret said with deadly calm.
"Do you really think a spoiled brat in a uniform scares me?"
On the bed, Olivia slowly pulled the hidden audio recorder from beneath her pillow.
Her hands were shaking, but her eyes were filled with a fiery, unshakeable resolve.
She pressed the play button.
The small speaker crackled before Ethan’s voice filled the silent room.
"Just up her blood pressure medication, Mom," the recorded Ethan said.
"If she falls down the stairs, the insurance pays out double for an accidental death while pregnant," Diane’s recorded voice replied smoothly.
The color instantly completely vanished from the real Diane’s face.
Ethan stopped struggling against Margaret’s grip, his entire body going terrifyingly limp.
They had just listened to a confession of premeditated murder.
"You were going to kill me," Olivia whispered, tears finally falling down her bruised cheeks.
"For money that didn't even belong to you."
Margaret pulled out her phone with her free hand and dialed 911.

"I have an active-duty military officer and his mother detained for conspiracy to commit murder."
