Chapter 5 - The Kidnapping

Vincent fell to his knees beside Marcus and checked his pulse.
His oldest friend was still breathing but bleeding heavily from a head wound.
The security guards rushed forward with medical kits.
Vincent grabbed the head of security by the collar of his shirt.
He demanded to know how a vehicle slipped past the front gates.
The guard stammered that Laurel had flashed a security override badge.
She had taken Hannah at gunpoint and driven off in a black sedan.
Vincent felt the world violently spin around him.
He had survived assassins, federal indictments, and rival gang wars.
But losing his wife was the one thing that could actually kill him.
Vincent stood up and wiped the soot and blood from his face.
He walked to the trunk of a secondary security vehicle.
He pulled out a heavy tactical vest and an assault rifle.
He was no longer the polished businessman running a charity foundation.
He was the ruthless boss who had conquered the Chicago underworld.
His phone buzzed with an incoming video call.
Vincent accepted the call and Laurel's bloody face appeared on the screen.
She was driving the sedan with one hand and holding the phone with the other.
Hannah was sitting in the passenger seat bound with heavy zip ties.
She looked terrified but she was actively fighting her restraints.
Laurel mocked Vincent and told him his empire was officially over.
She demanded that he transfer all foundation assets to the Romano family within an hour.
If he refused she promised to throw Hannah into the freezing Chicago River.
Vincent stared directly into the camera lens with dead eyes.
He told Laurel she had just made the biggest mistake of her miserable life.
He did not negotiate with terrorists and he certainly did not negotiate with thieves.
Laurel laughed and abruptly ended the video call.
Vincent immediately ordered his tech team to trace the phone signal.
They pinged the cell tower and found the sedan was heading toward the old shipyard.
It was a desolate area controlled entirely by the Romano family.
Vincent loaded his weapons and climbed into a heavy pursuit truck.
He told his men that tonight there would be no survivors.
He was going to burn the Romano syndicate to the ground.
As Vincent sped toward the shipyard his phone chimed with a text message.
It was a secret location beacon activated from Hannah's smartwatch.
Vincent realized his brilliant wife had managed to turn her tracker on despite being tied up.

The flashing dot on the map was not at the shipyard.
It was moving directly toward the very hotel where this entire nightmare began.
