Chapter 20 - A New Legacy

Three years later the sun was shining brightly over a beautiful estate in the Italian countryside.

The dark and freezing winters of Chicago were nothing but a distant memory.

Vincent was sitting on a rustic wooden patio overlooking a vast and peaceful vineyard.

He was wearing a simple linen shirt and had a relaxed smile that never seemed to leave his face.

He was no longer a man who jumped at loud noises or checked the shadows for assassins.

He was just a husband who spent his days learning how to make terrible homemade pasta.

Hannah walked out onto the patio carrying a tray of fresh lemonade.

She looked more beautiful than she ever had in her entire life.

Her global textile conservation business had become the most respected historical charity in the world.

She had spent the last three years restoring the ruined tapestries of European castles.

But her greatest masterpiece was currently sleeping soundly in a woven basket near the table.

Vincent reached down and gently rocked the small cradle.

Inside lay their six-month-old daughter wrapped in a soft blanket Hannah had sewn by hand.

They had named her Elena after Vincent's mother who never got to see her son find peace.

Elena opened her bright brown eyes and laughed when Vincent tickled her small chin.

She would never know the name Lorenzo or the violence of the Chicago underworld.

She would never have to hide behind armored glass or fear the sound of a screeching tire.

She was going to grow up surrounded by light and art and unconditional love.

Hannah sat down next to Vincent and rested her head on his strong shoulder.

She looked out at the rolling green hills and took a deep breath of the warm summer air.

Vincent wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her close.

He told her that every single terrible thing he had endured was completely worth it to reach this exact moment.

Hannah smiled and kissed his cheek softly.

She reminded him that broken things could always be fixed if you used the right threads.

They sat together in comfortable silence and watched the sunset paint the sky in brilliant gold.
