Chapter 37 - The Quiet Sunday

Sundays in the loft had evolved into an art form of peaceful domesticity. There were no alarms, no scheduled board meetings, and no urgent legal briefs demanding immediate attention.

The morning sun filtered softly through the tall industrial windows, casting warm geometric patterns across the hardwood floor. The aroma of freshly brewed French roast coffee and warm blueberry pancakes filled the air.

I sat at the wooden kitchen island, flipping through the Sunday edition of the city newspaper while Damian leaned against the counter, casually reading a review of a new historical exhibit opening at the Museum of Fine Arts.

"We should go," Damian said, lowering the section he was holding. "The exhibit features maritime art from the nineteenth century. Apparently, they have several original oil paintings of Boston Harbor during the clipper ship era."

"Only if we walk down through the public gardens first," I stipulated with a smile, taking a sip of my coffee. "The azaleas are in full bloom right now, and I refuse to spend a gorgeous Sunday afternoon cooped up indoors."

"Deal," Damian agreed smoothly, walking around the island to press a soft kiss to the top of my head. "Azaleas first, nineteenth-century schooners second, and dinner at our favorite Italian bistro in the North End to finish the day."

It was a simple itinerary, utterly devoid of the calculated risk assessments and tactical paranoia that had once defined every hour of our existence. Yet, as I looked up at Damian—relaxed, smiling, and entirely free—I knew that this quiet, unhurried simplicity was the greatest victory we could have ever claimed.
