Chapter 15 - The River North Confrontation

By four o'clock that afternoon, Dante had located Thomas Vance’s temporary base of operations—a high-end, glass-walled private lounge on the upper level of a commercial building in River North overlooking the Chicago River.
The black Mercedes pulled silently to the curb beneath the building’s private underground parking entrance. Dante and two armed operatives secured the perimeter, while Alessandro and Maeve stepped out into the quiet subterranean garage, flanked by the cool concrete pillars and the distant hum of city traffic above.
“Are you sure you want to come up?” Alessandro asked softly, pausing beside the elevator door to look down at Maeve. “I can handle Vance in thirty seconds and leave him wondering what hit him.”
“I’m coming,” Maeve said firmly, her jaw set with quiet determination. “He was my chief of surgery for five years. He traded my research credentials to launder syndicate money without my knowledge, and then he ran like a coward when the federal investigation started. This isn't just your fight, Alessandro. It’s mine.”
A proud, dangerous smile touched the corner of Alessandro’s mouth. He pressed the private elevator override key, and the heavy doors slid open instantly.
The private lounge on the sixth floor was spacious, modern, and entirely deserted save for a single figure standing by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the river. Dr. Thomas Vance—silver-haired, impeccably tailored in an Italian wool suit, and holding a crystal glass of scotch—turned around as the elevator chime echoed through the silent room.
Vance’s expression of smug confidence faltered the moment he saw who stepped out of the elevator. His eyes darted from Alessandro’s cold, lethal stance to Maeve’s steady, unforgiving gaze.
“Maeve,” Vance recovered quickly, forcing a thin, patronizing smile as he set his glass down on a glass-topped table. “And... Mr. Rossi. I must admit, I didn't expect you to bring your wife to a business meeting.”
“You didn't schedule a business meeting, Thomas,” Maeve said, her voice cutting through the silent room like a surgical scalpel as she walked forward, stopping ten feet away. “You sent an encrypted threat to my private phone like a coward hiding in a Zürich bolthole.”
Vance laughed nervously, though beads of sweat began to form along his hairline as Alessandro stepped forward, standing half a step behind and to the right of Maeve—an immovable wall of absolute authority.
“It wasn't a threat, my dear,” Vance stammered slightly, raising his hands defensively. “It was... an introduction. Mr. Rossi’s empire is built on foundations that a great many federal investigators would find very interesting. All I wanted was a modest relocation fee. Ten million dollars, transferred quietly to an offshore account, and I vanish back to Europe permanently. No fuss, no exposure.”
Alessandro didn't raise his voice. He didn't draw a weapon. He simply took two slow, deliberate steps forward until he was towering over the older surgeon.
“You think you can extort me?” Alessandro asked, his voice a low, terrifying growl that echoed off the glass walls. “You think a washed-up surgeon who laundered drug money for dead syndicates has leverage over my wife?”
“I have the original compliance audits from Mercy General,” Vance snapped, panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade. “If I release them to the federal prosecutor’s office—”
“You won't release anything,” Alessandro interrupted coldly, his dark eyes locking onto Vance with the dead certainty of an executioner. “Because by sundown, your assets will be frozen, your passport will be flagged as invalid by Interpol, and every bank in Zurich will lock your accounts for international money laundering.”
Vance’s face drained of all color. He staggered back against the glass window, staring in sheer horror at the man standing before him. “You... you can’t do that. That’s illegal—”
“I am the law in this city, Thomas,” Alessandro said quietly, stepping back to stand beside Maeve. He wrapped a protective arm around her waist. “And you just made the fatal mistake of knocking on the wrong door.”

Maeve looked at Vance not with anger, but with a cold, clinical pity. “You spent your whole life cutting people open for status and money, Thomas. You never understood what real power was.”
She turned away, walking back toward the private elevator without looking back once. Alessandro lingered for one final second, his dark eyes fixing Vance in a terrifying stare before he turned and followed her into the elevator, leaving the ruined surgeon trembling alone in the glass room.
