Chapter 34 - The Summer of the Open Windows

The arrival of June brought a golden warmth to Boston Harbor, transforming the waterfront into a vibrant tapestry of bustling piers, sunlit promenades, and the steady, rhythmic hum of a city fully at peace. For the first time in years, the large industrial windows of our loft remained wide open day and night, inviting the cool evening sea breezes and the distant, melodic sounds of harbor bells inside without a single second thought of caution or defense.

Inside the converted loft, the space felt lighter, breathing with the easy rhythm of a life unburdened by secrets. Sunlight poured across the polished hardwood floors, illuminating the stacks of architectural sketches, foundation reports, and art books that cluttered the large oak table.

I stood by the open window, holding a mug of iced coffee, watching a fleet of brightly colored dinghies race across the deep blue expanse of the bay.

Damian walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin gently on my shoulder. His touch was as familiar and grounding as the steady pulse of the tide below.

"You've been staring at that sailboat race for ten minutes," Damian observed, his voice a warm murmur against my neck. "Are you planning to commandeer a vessel and challenge them, or are you just reminiscing about our days on the water?"

"I was thinking about how quiet the harbor sounds when nobody is looking over their shoulder," I replied, leaning back against his chest. "Remember when every sound outside at night used to make us trace the nearest exit?"

"I remember," Damian said quietly, his grip tightening fractionally. "And I remember the exact moment that feeling stopped—the day we walked out of the federal courthouse with our lives completely our own."

We stood together in companionable silence, watching the white sails carve crisp lines across the water. The past was a closed book resting on a high shelf, its lessons learned and its shadows permanently dispelled by the unyielding brilliance of the present.
