Chapter 22 - The Vault of History

Later that evening, returning to the sanctuary of the loft, the quiet amber lighting welcomed us home. While Damian poured two glasses of aged scotch at the private bar, I walked over to the secure wall safe hidden behind a minimalist art installation in the study.

Inside the vault lay the final physical ledgers of the old syndicate—encrypted cipher keys, transfer records, and intelligence dossiers that had once held the power to destroy governments. They were no longer weapons of war; they were historical artifacts locked away forever.

Damian walked over, handing me a crystal glass of scotch before setting his own down on the mahogany shelf. He stood close behind me, his arm resting lightly around my waist as we looked down at the dark, silent files.

“Should we burn them?” I asked quietly, my fingers hovering over the edge of the top ledger.

Damian shook his head slowly. “No. Leave them there. Let them serve as a permanent reminder of where we came from, and how far we’ve climbed to reach the light.”

I nodded, closing the heavy steel door of the vault and listening to the satisfying click of the locking mechanism sealing the past away for good. I turned around in his arms, resting my hands against his chest.

“The past is locked away,” I whispered. “And the future?”

“The future is ours to write,” Damian replied, his voice deep, rich, and absolute.
