Chapter 16 - The Silence of the Lake

That evening, the penthouse on Lake Shore Drive was once again wrapped in the quiet, comforting silence of the Chicago night. The rain had stopped entirely, leaving behind a sky so clear that the distant stars twinkled like scattered diamonds over the dark expanse of Lake Michigan.

Maeve stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the living room, holding a fresh cup of Earl Grey tea. The heavy black onyx ring rested on her finger now—not hidden in her pocket, but proudly worn as a permanent seal of their contract.

Soft footsteps crossed the walnut floorboards behind her. Alessandro approached silently, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind and pulling her back against his chest. He rested his chin on her shoulder, breathing in the familiar scent of her hair.

“Vance is gone,” Alessandro murmured softly against her neck. “Private jet cleared O'Hare twenty minutes ago, bound for an interrogation cell in a secure facility in South America. He won't be bothering anyone ever again.”

Maeve leaned back into his embrace, taking a slow sip of her tea before turning her head slightly to look at him in the dim amber light of the penthouse.

“I wasn't worried,” she said softly. “I knew you’d handle it.”

Alessandro’s arms tightened around her waist, his fingers sliding over hers to hold the warm ceramic cup between them.

“It wasn't just me, Maeve,” Alessandro whispered, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against the skin of her neck. “It was you. You faced your past without flinching. That is what makes you a true Rossi.”

Maeve turned within his embrace, wrapping her arms around his neck and looking up into his dark, unwavering eyes with a bright, challenging smile.

“A Rossi,” she repeated playfully. “Does that mean I get voting rights on the shipping cartel?”

“It means you own everything I am, and everything I will ever build,” Alessandro replied, his voice dropping into a rich, resonant register that sent a shiver of pure happiness down her spine. “The empire, the towers, the lake, the city—all of it belongs to us.”

He reached up with his right hand, slowly, deliberately touching the black onyx ring on her finger.

“What is it about, then?” Maeve asked softly, her hazel eyes shining in the amber light.

“It’s about finding the one person in the world who stays when the room gets dark,” Alessandro Rossi whispered against her ear, pulling her flush against his chest as the distant lights of Chicago shimmered across the water. “And signing a contract that can never be broken.”
