Chapter 36 - The Unbroken Circle

The days continued to melt into one another with the serene inevitability of a well-oiled machine. Vale House remained a fortress of tranquility, untouched by the noise of a world that continued to turn according to our design.
Penny visited us on a crisp Saturday afternoon, arriving in her sleek electric sedan. She brought sketches for her upcoming European retrospective in Paris and shared stories of how her gallery in River North had become a cultural benchmark for the Midwest. She laughed easily, her eyes bright and unburdened, entirely free of the shadows that had once defined our youth. When she left, she didn't look over her shoulder with anxiety or fear; she drove down the private, tree-lined drive with the confident grace of someone who knew her future was entirely her own.
We watched her car vanish into the distance from the second-floor library window.
