Chapter 16 - The Quiet Hours of the Estate

Long after the last guest had departed, the winter snow continued to fall in thick, silent flakes outside the windows of Vale House. The estate had returned to its deep, comforting nocturnal quiet, broken only by the crackle of embers dying down in the grand fireplace of the master suite.

Elena sat at her dressing table, unpinning the diamond-encrusted hair accessories from her dark waves, watching her own reflection in the antique gilded mirror. Through the glass, she saw Adrian walk quietly into the room, having discarded his tuxedo jacket and loosened his black silk tie. He stepped up behind her, placing his hands on her shoulders and leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss against the bare skin of her neck.

"You were extraordinary tonight," Adrian whispered, his hands sliding down to rest gently on her collarbones. "The governor looked like a schoolboy trying to impress his favorite professor when you explained the tax-incentive model for the green-energy grid."

Elena turned slightly in her seat, looking up at him through the mirror. "They need guidance, Adrian. For decades, this city was run by men who only knew how to take. Teaching them how to build is the hardest part of the job."

"And you're tired," Adrian noted instantly, his keen eyes catching the subtle shadow of fatigue beneath her dark eyes.

"Not tired," Elena corrected softly, standing up from the vanity and turning to wrap her arms around his neck. "Just... full. When I look at where we were a year ago—hiding in kitchens, dodging bullets, wondering if we’d see the next sunrise—and I look at where we are now... it feels almost miraculous."

"It wasn't a miracle, Elena," Adrian said firmly, his hands settling securely on her waist as he pulled her flush against his chest. "It was survival, grit, and the most stubborn woman God ever put on this earth."

Elena laughed softly, burying her face in the warm crook of his neck. "And the most dangerous man," she added.

"Especially him," Adrian agreed, his voice dropping into a low, rumbling hum as he wrapped his arms around her, holding her tightly against the cold winter night.
