Chapter 17 - The Eternal Horizon

The winter storm cleared before dawn, leaving the Chicago coastline bathed in an ethereal, crystalline stillness. The first rays of morning light crept over the surface of Lake Michigan, turning the ice-flecked water into a sheet of liquid gold that stretched out infinitely toward the eastern horizon.

Inside Vale House, the fires burned steady in every hearth, casting a warm, amber glow across the marble floors that echoed with peace. The heavy iron gates remained closed to enemies—secure against a world that no longer had any power over them—but wide open to a future that belonged entirely to the two people who had survived the worst of what the city could throw at them.

Power, Elena had learned through blood, fire, and intellect, was not measured by how many men feared your name in a dark room. It was measured by the quiet, absolute certainty of the person sleeping beside you when the lights went out.

Adrian set his empty coffee mug down on the stone balustrade of the master terrace, the crisp morning air billowing his open shirt collar. He turned Elena gently in his arms, pulling her against his chest, looking down into her dark, intelligent eyes with an intensity that time would never dull.

“Where to next, Mrs. Vale?” he asked quietly, the wind carrying his words softly out over the lake.

May you like

Elena smiled, looking out toward the endless, glittering horizon where the golden light met the endless blue sky.

“Nowhere,” she whispered, resting her hands over his heart as the steady, familiar beat answered her every thought. “We’re right where we’re supposed to be.”
