Chapter 30 - The Sunset Over the Bay

As afternoon faded into evening, the winter sun began its dramatic descent behind the Boston skyline, painting the sky in a breathtaking gradient of bruised violet, burning copper, and fiery gold. The reflection danced across the choppy surface of the harbor, turning the floating sheets of ice into glittering shards of amber and sapphire.
Rafe and Tessa slipped away from the bustling loft for a quiet moment, stepping out onto the wide stone balcony that overlooked the water. The freezing wind bit sharply at their skin, but the chill was easily ignored as Rafe pulled Tessa firmly against his chest, wrapping his heavy wool overcoat around her shoulders to shield her from the draft.
"Cold?" he asked softly, his breath forming a small white cloud in the twilight air.
"Not at all," she smiled, resting her hands against the lapels of his coat, feeling the solid, steady thrum of his heartbeat beneath. "I was just thinking about how strange life is. If someone had told me six months ago, while I was suturing a gunshot wound in a freezing alley, that I’d be standing here married to the most feared man in New England, I would have told them they belonged in the psychiatric ward."
Rafe let out a low, rumbling chuckle. "And if someone had told me that a stubborn trauma nurse was going to walk into my office and dismantle my entire empire with three words and a roll of gauze, I would have had them thrown into the harbor."
"Yet, here we are," she whispered, her dark eyes catching the dying light of the sunset.

"Here we are," Rafe repeated, his voice dropping into a quiet, profound intensity. "Off the books, out of the shadows, and entirely where we belong."
He leaned down, capturing her lips in a tender, lingering kiss that tasted of salt air, winter chill, and the unbreakable promise of all the years still waiting for them. Below them, the harbor lights flickered on one by one, guiding the ships safely home to a port that would never see another war.
