Chapter 18 - The Open Gate

By mid-morning, the Calder administrative compound was alive with the quiet, efficient rhythm of legitimate maritime commerce. Cranes lifted shipping containers of textiles and electronics onto clean cargo vessels, trucks rolled through the security gates with digital manifests rather than armed escorts, and the air smelled of salt water, coffee, and fresh snow.
Outside the main office overlooking Berth 14, the heavy iron security gates—once built to lock out rival syndicates, corrupt municipal police, and hostile enforcers—stood wide open to the crisp winter air, welcoming the postal carriers, the delivery trucks, and the endless possibilities of a world reclaimed.

Liam laughed, turning back inside to field a call from the shipping yards.
Tessa leaned her head against Rafe’s shoulder, watching a lone seagull glide effortlessly across the sunlit expanse of the Boston harbor. The past—with all its blood, its violence, its hunted nights and whispered warnings—was gone, buried beneath the snow and the weight of a new beginning.
“Cold?” Rafe asked quietly, tightening his coat around her.
May you like
“Not at all,” Tessa smiled, turning her face up to kiss his cheek. “For the first time in my life, I’m completely warm.”
Rafe looked down at her, his gray eyes reflecting the brilliant winter sun, and pulled her closer against his chest as the bells of a distant harbor church rang out across the city, welcoming the dawn of their forever.
