Chapter 16 - The Final Ledger

Later that night, long after the dishes were cleared, the guests had retired to their respective quarters, and the city of Boston had settled into a deep, hushed slumber, Rafe stood alone in his private ground-floor office.

The room was dark, save for the dying embers in the stone fireplace and the cool, pale moonlight streaming through the high windows overlooking the icy waters of Berth 14.

On the center of the mahogany desk sat the heavy iron-bound ledger book that had belonged to his grandfather—the founding patriarch of the Calder syndicate, a man who had ruled the Boston waterfront with an iron fist, an army of enforcers, and a heart carved out of granite.

Rafe opened the heavy cover. The yellowed pages were filled with columns of figures, cargo routes, territory divisions, and names of men long dead or forgotten. It was a history written in ink and ruthlessness—a monument to an era of survival through dominance.

With a slow, deliberate movement, Rafe picked up a heavy black archival marker.

He didn't tear out the pages. Instead, on the very last blank sheet at the back of the book, beneath decades of debts, feuds, and operational inventories, he wrote a single sentence in his sharp, precise handwriting:

“Account closed. Balance settled in full by love.”

He snapped the heavy leather cover shut with a definitive thud that echoed softly in the quiet room.

A pair of soft footsteps sounded on the hardwood floor behind him. A moment later, familiar arms wrapped around his waist from behind, and Tessa rested her cheek against his shoulder, looking down at the closed ledger.

“What are you doing down here in the dark?” she asked softly.

“Closing the final account,” Rafe answered, turning around in her embrace and pulling her against his chest. He looked down into her dark, expressive eyes, seeing his entire past washed away by the light of her presence.

“And what does the balance sheet look like now?” she teased gently, a playful smile touching her lips.

May you like

Rafe smiled back, wrapping his arms securely around her and burying his face in her hair as the harbor wind rattled the windowpanes outside.

“Infinite,” he whispered against her ear. “We’re completely off the books.”
