Chapter 19 - The Hearth and the Horizon

The winter wind howling off Massachusetts Bay could rattle the reinforced glass of the Calder offices all it wanted, but inside the private suite, the world had shrunk down to the steady, comforting crackle of birch logs in the stone hearth and the rhythmic sound of Rafe’s breathing.
Tessa sat curled in the corner of the deep leather sofa, a heavy cashmere throw draped over her legs, watching the amber flames cast long, shifting shadows across the dark wood paneling. The frantic, life-or-death pulse of the downtown emergency clinic felt like a distant memory, though it was a life she would never truly abandon. Medicine was her calling; Rafe was her anchor.
Heavy footsteps approached down the hall, followed by a familiar, low knock at the heavy oak door.
"Enter," Rafe called out, his voice smooth and commanding, yet devoid of the lethal edge it had carried only months prior.
The door creaked open to reveal Liam, holding a thick stack of manila folders and a steaming mug of black coffee. He looked at the two of them—Tessa curled comfortably against the cushions, and Rafe sitting in the high-backed leather chair with a rare, relaxed posture—and let out an amused sigh.
"I hate to interrupt domestic bliss," Liam announced, dropping the folders onto the corner of the mahogany desk with a dull thud, "but if we're actually going through with this quiet city hall wedding on Thursday, someone needs to approve the final customs declarations for the European shipping containers arriving at Berth 12."
Rafe didn't even look up from the fire. "Delegate it to Marcus. That's what his promotion to director of logistics was for."
"Marcus is busy negotiating port authority fees with three different city councilmen who are still terrified you're going to audit their campaign funds," Liam retorted, grinning broadly. "Which, by the way, is a brilliant deterrent. You don't even have to threaten them anymore; the implication of a Calder audit makes municipal politicians fold faster than a cheap card table."

Tessa laughed softly, pulling the blanket higher around her shoulders. "Leave him alone, Liam. He's officially retired from municipal intimidation tactics until at least next week."
"Next week?" Rafe raised an eyebrow, a slow, teasing smile breaking across his face as he looked at Tessa. "Who said anything about next week? I'm retired permanently."
