Chapter 5 - The Devil in the Forest

David aimed his heavy military rifle squarely at Gabriel’s broad chest with a sickening, triumphant smirk on his face.
He loudly mocked Gabriel for foolishly risking his vast criminal empire over a worthless, pathetic maid and her loud brat.
Gabriel very carefully set Nora down on the wet grass and protectively stepped completely in front of Maren.
He calmly offered David ten million dollars in completely untraceable cryptocurrency if he simply turned around and walked away right now.
David laughed loudly at the offer and stated that his powerful employers wanted Gabriel’s entire territory, not just his pocket change.
He cruelly ordered Maren to walk over to him immediately, or he would shoot the innocent toddler right in the head.
Maren let out a heartbreaking, shattered sob and slowly stepped out from behind Gabriel’s protective, broad shoulders.
Gabriel aggressively grabbed her cold wrist, fiercely refusing to ever let her sacrifice herself for his safety.
Maren looked deeply into his intense eyes and softly whispered that she truly loved him.
Before Gabriel could physically stop her, she lunged violently forward and aggressively tackled David into the slippery mud.
The heavy rifle fired wildly and blindly into the dark, stormy sky as the two of them struggled fiercely on the ground.
Gabriel instantly drew his own pistol and mercilessly shot David twice in his right shoulder.
David screamed in absolute agony and rolled away in the mud, instantly dropping his heavy weapon in the dark dirt.
Gabriel quickly grabbed the dropped assault rifle and laid down incredibly heavy, suppressing covering fire into the surrounding trees.
He forcefully shattered the heavy iron lock on the maintenance gate with a single, perfectly aimed bullet.
He scooped up the crying toddler and aggressively dragged Maren through the rusty iron bars into the pitch-black woods.
They sprinted blindly and desperately through the incredibly thick brush until their burning lungs begged for oxygen.
They finally reached a small, abandoned hunting cabin hidden very deep within the sprawling, mountainous valley.

Gabriel kicked the rotting wooden door open and quickly ushered them inside the completely pitch-black, silent room.
When he finally struck a small match to light a rusty lantern, he realized Maren was profusely bleeding from her stomach.
