Chapter 29 - The Last Brother

In darkness, Claire heard a gun click.
Not from Michael.
From somewhere behind them.
A shot struck the ceiling.
Everyone dropped.
Emergency lights flickered on.
Michael was gone.
Claire looked around.
“Where is he?”
No answer.
Jonathan pulled her behind a concrete wall.
Wesley grabbed Audrey.
Another shot.
Then silence.
Claire crawled toward the monitor.
Adrian's face was still visible.
“Where is Michael?”
Adrian smiled.
“You still call him that.”
“Who is he?”
“My brother.”
“Which one?”
Adrian leaned back.
“The one Martin believed was Michael.”
Claire stared.
“You're saying he's someone else.”
“Yes.”
“Then where is the real Michael?”
Adrian's expression changed.
“Dead.”
Claire felt sick.
“Since when?”
“Seven years.”
She turned toward Wesley.
“Then who have we been trusting?”
A voice came from the darkness.
“Me.”
Claire spun.
The man who stepped forward was the same man who had called himself Michael.
He slowly removed a small device from his pocket.
“My name is Ethan Vale.”
Thomas's surname.
Claire's heart dropped.
“You're Thomas's son.”
“Yes.”
“Why did you pretend to be my brother?”
“Because Martin asked me to.”
Adrian laughed through the speaker.
“Martin asked everyone to do something.”
Ethan looked at the screen.
“You didn't win.”
Adrian's smile faded.
“You think the disclosure system will save you?”
“It already has.”
Jonathan checked the system.
The public release had begun.
Thousands of financial records were uploading.
News alerts appeared.
Investigators were downloading documents.
Law enforcement agencies were requesting access.
The network was collapsing.
Adrian watched the screen.
“You don't understand how many people will come after you.”
Ethan answered:
“They already came.”
Claire stepped forward.
“Adrian.”
He looked at her.
“Why?”
“Why what?”
“Why target my family?”
“Because Martin betrayed ours.”
“How?”
“He promised to keep the network hidden.”
Claire frowned.
“Martin was part of it?”
Adrian nodded.
“For a short time.”
The room became silent.
“He joined because our father forced him.”
“Our father?”
“Yes.”
Claire's mind raced.
Their father.
The man their mother said died young.
The family history had always been incomplete.
Adrian continued.
“The network was inherited.”
“What happened to him?”
“He tried to leave.”
Claire whispered:
“And Martin?”
“Martin helped him.”
“But then he changed sides.”
Adrian's face became harder.
“He fell in love with you.”
Claire said nothing.
“He wanted a normal life.”
“Then why stay involved?”
“Because he knew leaving wasn't enough.”
Adrian smiled bitterly.
“He wanted to destroy the organization from inside.”
“And you?”
“I wanted to control it.”
Ethan shook his head.
“That was your mistake.”
Adrian looked at him.
“You don't know what you're talking about.”
“I know about the records.”
Ethan lifted another drive.
“Everything.”
Adrian's expression changed.
“Where did you get that?”
“From Thomas.”
“Thomas is dead.”
“No.”
Ethan smiled.
“He's alive.”
Claire remembered the warehouse.
The gunshot.
Thomas surviving.
“They staged his death?”
Ethan nodded.
“Because we needed Adrian to believe he was gone.”
Adrian stared.
For the first time, he looked frightened.
Claire stepped closer.
“Where is the real Michael?”
Adrian was silent.
“Tell me.”
“He died protecting Martin.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“And you let us believe another man was him.”
“I needed access to you.”
“For what?”
“To unlock the trust.”
Claire looked at the screen.
“You already had my credentials.”
“Not your biometric authorization.”
“So you used my home.”
“Yes.”
“You manipulated me into opening the system.”
“Yes.”
“But Martin expected it.”
Adrian laughed.
“You still believe everything he planned worked.”
Claire looked at the video.
Then she realized.
“Not everything.”
“What?”
“The system.”
She looked at Jonathan.
“Martin couldn't know exactly what Adrian would do.”
“No.”
“He made the trap flexible.”
Jonathan nodded slowly.
“He designed it so the network exposed itself whenever someone tried to take control.”
Claire stared at Adrian.
“You didn't beat Martin.”
Adrian's smile disappeared.
“You completed his plan.”
The room went silent.
Then sirens sounded outside.
Multiple vehicles.
Adrian looked toward the screen.
“They're here.”
Claire whispered, “This is over.”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
He reached beneath his desk.
A red warning light appeared.
Ethan shouted:
“Get down!”
An alarm began.
Adrian had activated the emergency destruction system.
Jonathan grabbed Claire.
The computers began shutting down.
Wesley shouted:
“Can the evidence survive?”
Jonathan looked at the upload status.
“Seventy-eight percent.”
The system flashed.
EIGHTY.
EIGHTY-FIVE.
NINETY.
Adrian smiled.
“You won't have enough.”
Claire stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because the original files are here.”
He pointed to the underground vault.
The door began closing.
Claire ran.
Wesley followed.
Ethan shouted.
“Claire!”
She reached the vault just before the door sealed.
Inside were boxes.
Hundreds of them.
Physical evidence.
Contracts.
Photographs.
Bank documents.
Everything.
She started pulling boxes toward the door.
The emergency system beeped.
“One minute.”
Wesley pushed boxes through.
Jonathan grabbed files.
Ethan forced the door open.
They carried everything into the corridor.
Behind them, the server room exploded in sparks.
The monitors died.
The public upload stopped.
Jonathan checked the status.
“Ninety-four percent.”
Claire looked at the mountain of evidence.
“Is that enough?”
Jonathan nodded.
“More than enough.”
Adrian's screen went black.
Sirens grew louder.
Police entered the basement.
Daniel was arrested upstairs.
Elliot was found hiding in a car.
The network's financial accounts were frozen before midnight.
Claire stood among the evidence boxes.
Nine years of fear.
Nine years of silence.
And now the truth was everywhere.
But one thing remained.
She looked at Ethan.
“What happened to Martin?”
Ethan lowered his eyes.
“He wasn't killed that night.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
Ethan handed her a final envelope.
“It came from Martin.”
“Where?”
“He told me not to give it to you until everything else was over.”
Claire opened it.
Inside was one page.
Claire,
There is one final truth.
I survived the night they thought I died.
I chose to disappear because the people hunting us would never stop while they believed I was alive.
I'm sorry.
I wanted to come home.
I almost did.
But I needed you to be safe first.
Now it's over.
If you're ready, meet me at the place where we first became a family.
Claire couldn't breathe.
Wesley read the final line.
“Where is that?”
Ethan answered.
“Cape Cod.”
Claire looked toward the stairway.
After everything she had learned, one question remained.
Was Martin waiting for them?
Or was this the final trap?
She folded the letter.
“We're going.”
Outside, dawn was beginning.
For the first time, Claire wasn't afraid of what waited in the light.
May you like
She was afraid of hope.
Because hope was the one thing she hadn't allowed herself to feel in nine years.
