Chapter 13 - The Hidden Heir

The farmhouse looked exactly as Claire remembered.

Empty.

Weathered.

Forgotten.

But this time, she knew it was not abandoned.

Someone had been inside.

Fresh tire tracks cut through the mud.

The front door was unlocked.

Inside, the desk where Martin had left his final letter had been moved.

Claire approached slowly.

“What are we looking for?”

Nora pointed toward the floor.

“Your husband's journals.”

“They were taken.”

“Not all of them.”

They searched the study.

A loose floorboard revealed a narrow cavity.

Inside was a leather notebook.

Claire recognized it.

Martin's handwriting covered the first page.

He had written dates.

Names.

Meetings.

Payments.

Then she found something she had never seen before.

A family tree.

Mercer.

Hale.

Lang.

Voss.

Pike.

The names connected in complicated lines.

At the very bottom were two names.

Wesley.

Audrey.

Claire stared.

“Why are my children on this?”

Nora took the notebook.

“This isn't a family tree.”

“What is it?”

“An inheritance map.”

Claire frowned.

She read the notes beside Wesley's name.

Control.

Beside Audrey's.

Protection.

Beside her own.

Authority.

Claire's stomach tightened.

Martin had divided the purpose of the trust among them.

But beneath Claire's name was another sentence.

Primary holder unless replaced by blood heir.

“What does that mean?”

Nora went silent.

Samuel read the page.

“Blood heir.”

Claire looked at him.

“My children are blood heirs.”

“Not the ones Martin was referring to.”

Claire stared.

“Then who?”

A floorboard creaked behind them.

They spun around.

Nobody.

But the back door was open.

Someone had entered.

Claire moved toward it.

Outside, a man stood beside the barn.

Gray hair.

Tall.

Older.

Caleb.

He didn't run.

He simply looked at her.

Claire stepped into the yard.

“Caleb!”

He stopped.

“Don't come closer.”

“Why?”

“Because you still don't know who is watching.”

“I know enough.”

“No.”

He looked at the notebook in her hand.

“You've barely scratched the surface.”

Claire's voice hardened.

“You've been hiding for fifteen years.”

“Yes.”

“You've been watching me.”

“Yes.”

“You frightened me.”

“I needed to know whether you could survive.”

“Survive what?”

Caleb looked toward the farmhouse.

“What your husband knew.”

Claire stepped closer.

“Tell me.”

Caleb sighed.

“Martin discovered that the Mercer family had a hidden heir.”

Claire stared.

“Who?”

Caleb looked back at the house.

“My son.”

Nora stepped outside.

“Caleb.”

He nodded toward her.

“You came.”

“You shouldn't have.”

He smiled sadly.

“I knew she would find the notebook.”

Claire looked between them.

“You both knew?”

Nora shook her head.

“I knew part of it.”

Claire felt betrayed again.

“Everybody knows pieces of my life except me.”

Caleb looked at her.

“That's because every person who knew the whole story was targeted.”

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“Martin?”

“Yes.”

“Who else?”

“Your husband's brother.”

“You.”

Caleb looked at her.

“I was supposed to die fifteen years ago.”

“Why didn't you?”

“Because your father helped me disappear.”

Claire's eyes widened.

“My father saved you?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Caleb swallowed.

“Because he discovered who ordered the accident.”

Claire's blood ran cold.

“Who?”

Caleb stared at her.

“Peter Lang.”

The name struck her like a physical blow.

Her husband's financial adviser.

The man who had tried to seize her property.

The man already in prison.

Claire shook her head.

“That can't be right.”

“It is.”

“He wasn't involved in my father's death.”

“He was.”

“Then why didn't Martin know?”

“He did.”

“Then why didn't he tell me?”

“Because he believed telling you would make you the next target.”

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“I've been a target anyway.”

Caleb nodded.

“Yes.”

He stepped closer.

“There is one more thing.”

“What?”

“Peter did not act alone.”

Claire looked toward Nora.

“Who else?”

Caleb's answer came quietly.

“Your husband's doctor.”

Claire stared.

“Doctor?”

“Dr. Nathan Bell.”

The name.

The same doctor who had signed Caleb's death certificate.

The same doctor who had later disappeared.

Claire remembered something.

Her husband's medical records had always listed Nathan Bell.

She had assumed it was routine.

She hadn't questioned it.

Now her stomach turned.

“What did he do?”

Caleb lowered his voice.

“He changed the cause of your husband's illness.”

Claire froze.

“What?”

“He knew Martin was dying.”

“But Martin told me his death was natural.”

“It was.”

“So what was changed?”

“The timeline.”

Claire felt cold.

May you like

“Why?”

“Because Martin didn't die when you thought he did.”
