Chapter 16 - The Company

The company had been dormant for decades.
That was what Claire learned from the records.
Her father had created it under a blind trust.
Martin had inherited control.
Then, after his death, the control transferred to Claire.
She had never known.
The company owned surveillance technology.
Environmental monitoring systems.
Data infrastructure.
And one abandoned facility near the coast.
Peter had spent years trying to obtain it.
“Why?” Claire asked.
Nora answered.
“Because that facility contains the original server archive.”
Claire stared.
“The evidence?”
“All of it.”
Samuel arrived with federal agents.
Peter was taken into custody again.
This time, there would be no quiet release.
The revelations had become too significant.
Wesley refused to speak to Caleb.
He remained beside Claire.
Audrey arrived that evening.
She knew immediately something had happened.
“What is going on?”
Claire couldn't find the words.
Wesley finally said, “Caleb is my biological father.”
Audrey stared.
Then looked at Claire.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
Audrey sat down.
For several minutes, no one spoke.
Then Audrey asked, “Does that change anything?”
Wesley looked at her.
“You tell me.”
She reached for his hand.
“You're still my brother.”
He squeezed her fingers.
Claire watched them.
After everything, that small gesture mattered more than any trust document.
The next morning, federal agents took Claire to the coastal facility.
The building was enormous.
Concrete walls.
Rusting fences.
A faded sign.
No Trespassing.
Inside, old server rooms remained.
Nora walked beside Claire.
“Your husband was here.”
“When?”
“Two months before his death.”
“Why?”
“To recover the archive.”
They entered a secure room.
A single computer remained.
Claire sat.
A password prompt appeared.
She knew immediately.
The password wasn't a date.
It wasn't a name.
It was a sentence Martin used to say to her.
Home is wherever you are.
The system unlocked.
Files appeared.
Thousands of them.
Payments.
Contracts.
Photos.
Audio.
Environmental reports.
Medical records.
And one file labeled:
FOR CLAIRE — OPEN LAST.
She clicked it.
Martin appeared.
Claire immediately started crying.
“Claire, if you're watching this, then Peter has probably told you about Wesley.”
She held her breath.
“I am sorry.”
Martin explained that he had learned Caleb was Wesley's biological father shortly before their marriage.
He had discovered that Caleb was being hunted.
Rather than abandon the child, Martin took responsibility.
“I did not become Wesley's father because I pitied him.”
Martin smiled.
“I became his father because I loved him.”
Claire covered her mouth.
“I knew one day the truth might surface.”
He paused.
“That day may hurt him.”
Claire looked toward Wesley.
“But I hope he remembers something.”
Martin's eyes softened.
“Being a father is not always about blood.”
The recording continued.
“I loved Wesley as my son.”
The screen went black.
Wesley entered the room.
He had heard enough.
He stood silently.
Then he sat beside Claire.
“He really loved me.”
“Yes.”
“I wish he had told me.”
“So do I.”
Wesley wiped his eyes.
Then another file opened automatically.
A document appeared.
The original company ownership agreement.
Under beneficiary:
Claire Bennett.
Under successor:
Wesley Mercer.
Under alternate successor:
Audrey Mercer.
Then a note.
Only transfer if all three consent.
Claire frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Nora read the fine print.
“The company cannot be sold by one heir.”
Peter had tried to seize it.
But he never could.
Because Claire, Wesley, and Audrey had to agree.
The final safeguard.
Martin had known exactly how greedy people might become.
Then Wesley pointed at another file.
“Mom.”
She opened it.
A surveillance photograph appeared.
Peter.
Standing beside a woman.
The woman was Mara Jennings.
Claire's former attorney.
She had believed Mara was only involved in the earlier fraud.
The timestamp was recent.
Very recent.
Three days ago.
Claire stared.
“Mara is still working with him.”
Nora nodded.
“Apparently.”
The next file contained a message.
The trust was never the real target.
The real target is the heir.
Claire looked at Wesley.
“Which heir?”
A red circle appeared around one name.
Wesley.
His biological connection to Caleb gave him a legal claim Peter desperately needed.
But there was something else.
A second line.
If Wesley signs, everything transfers.
Claire felt the fear return.
Peter had not been trying to steal the company.
May you like
He had been trying to force Wesley to surrender it.
And now someone had already begun targeting her son.
