Chapter 26 - The Brother Who Never Died

The footsteps stopped ten feet from them.
Nobody spoke.
Then a man's voice filled the darkness.
“Claire.”
She knew the voice.
Not because she remembered hearing it recently.
Because some sounds survive childhood.
Her brother's voice.
The voice that used to call her name across their mother's house.
The voice she had not heard in twelve years.
Claire whispered:
“Michael?”
The man stepped into the moonlight.
He looked older.
Thinner.
But the resemblance was unmistakable.
Wesley stared.
“That's him.”
Rebecca nodded.
“Michael Hart.”
Claire's knees weakened.
“You died.”
Michael gave a bitter smile.
“That was the idea.”
He looked toward Rebecca.
“You brought them here.”
“I brought Claire.”
Michael nodded.
“That was the only person I needed.”
Claire took one step forward.
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I had to.”
“For twelve years?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Mother wasn't the only person afraid of the network.”
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“You could have told me.”
“No.”
“You could have contacted me.”
“No.”
“You could have done something.”
Michael's face hardened.
“I did.”
He pointed toward the folder.
“I protected you.”
Claire laughed through her tears.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
She shook her head.
“Do you know what protection looks like when you're the person being left behind?”
Michael said nothing.
“Loneliness.”
Her voice broke.
“That's what it looks like.”
Wesley placed a hand on Claire's shoulder.
Michael looked at him.
“You're Martin's son.”
“Yes.”
“You look like him.”
“So do you.”
Michael smiled faintly.
“That isn't always a compliment.”
A crash sounded outside.
Rebecca looked toward the door.
“We're out of time.”
Michael nodded.
“They're here.”
The church doors burst open.
Men entered.
Daniel stood behind them.
And beside him was Elliot Graves.
Daniel raised his weapon.
“Step away from the evidence.”
Michael laughed.
“Still hiding behind other people?”
Daniel frowned.
“Take them.”
The men moved.
Michael pulled a gun.
Rebecca did the same.
Wesley pushed Claire and Audrey behind the altar.
Jonathan grabbed the folders.
Chaos erupted.
A shot shattered a stained-glass window.
Another struck the altar.
People screamed.
Claire dropped to the floor.
“Wesley!”
“I'm here!”
He pulled Audrey behind a stone pillar.
Michael fired twice.
One attacker dropped his weapon.
Rebecca shouted, “Basement!”
They ran.
Claire grabbed Jonathan.
“Where?”
“Behind the altar!”
A trapdoor opened.
They descended.
The church basement was older than the building.
Stone walls.
Dirt floor.
A narrow tunnel.
Michael led them.
“How long have you known about this?”
“Since I was a kid.”
Claire followed.
“Where does it go?”
“To the cemetery.”
They emerged behind the church.
A vehicle waited.
Rebecca opened the door.
“Everyone in.”
They drove through the trees.
After ten minutes, Michael finally spoke.
“Martin wanted you to know the truth.”
Claire stared at him.
“Then why didn't he tell me?”
“Because the final part required me.”
“What final part?”
Michael looked at Rebecca.
“The transfer.”
Claire frowned.
“What transfer?”
“The four hundred million.”
Jonathan looked up.
“What?”
Michael explained.
“Martin didn't simply hide the money.”
“He divided it.”
“Into four separate trusts.”
“Why?”
“To make the network believe the money was gone.”
Claire looked at him.
“But it isn't.”
“No.”
“Where is it?”
Michael glanced toward the road.
“Three trusts are frozen.”
“And the fourth?”
“Missing.”
Rebecca said quietly, “We believe Daniel has it.”
Jonathan shook his head.
“That would require access to the private authorization.”
Michael nodded.
“Which he doesn't have.”
Claire understood.
“I do.”
Michael looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Then that's why they're hunting me.”
“They've been hunting you for nine years.”
The car became silent.
Claire remembered the threats.
The strange calls.
The unexplained break-ins.
The files that disappeared.
The people who warned her to stop asking questions.
All of it suddenly connected.
“Why reveal everything now?”
Michael answered.
“Because Martin's condition has expired.”
“What condition?”
“He created a time lock.”
“Seven years?”
“No.”
Michael looked at Claire.
“Ten.”
Claire frowned.
“It's been nine.”
“Exactly.”
She understood.
One year remained.
“Why give me the truth now?”
“Because someone is trying to force the transfer before the deadline.”
Jonathan asked, “What happens at ten years?”
Michael looked at him.
“The trust automatically publishes everything.”
Everyone went silent.
Claire stared ahead.
“Then that's what Daniel is afraid of.”
“Yes.”
“And if the evidence becomes public?”
“The network collapses.”
“People go to prison.”
“Some.”
“And others?”
Michael looked away.
“Run.”
The vehicle slowed near a remote farmhouse.
Inside, they found computers, files, and photographs.
Claire noticed one wall covered with pictures.
Her life.
The house.
Wesley.
Audrey.
Martin.
She stared.
“How long have you been watching us?”
Michael answered honestly.
“Years.”
“Then you knew we were safe?”
“No.”
Claire turned.
“What?”
Michael pointed to a photograph of the family at dinner.
A red mark had been drawn across Audrey.
“I knew you were being watched.”
Claire felt sick.
“And you did nothing?”
“I couldn't expose myself.”
“That isn't an answer.”
Michael stepped closer.
“Do you think I enjoyed staying hidden?”
Claire said nothing.
“I watched Martin die.”
Her eyes widened.
“You were there?”
Michael nodded.
“I saw the car.”
“Why didn't you help him?”
“Because the people with him had children in the back seat.”
Claire covered her mouth.
Michael continued.
“I believed stopping them would get everyone killed.”
“And after?”
“After, Martin was gone.”
Claire whispered, “You failed him.”
Michael closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The word hung between them.
Then the laptop chimed.
Jonathan rushed over.
“We have a problem.”
He opened a file.
“Someone just accessed the trust.”
“Who?”
Jonathan pointed to the login.
Claire's name.
Her password.
Her authorization.
“It wasn't me.”
Michael stared at the screen.
“Then someone has your credentials.”
A second notification appeared.
TRANSFER PENDING.
Amount:
$400,000,000.
Destination:
Unknown International Trust.
Claire felt the room disappear.
“Stop it.”
Jonathan tried.
“No.”
“Why?”
“It's already authorized.”
“Who authorized it?”
He looked at the screen.
The name appeared.
Claire Hart.
Then another line appeared beneath it.
AUTHORIZED BY:
MARTIN HART.
Claire stared.
“That is impossible.”
Michael whispered:
“No.”
“What?”
“Martin's account was supposed to be sealed.”
The computer screen flashed.
A message appeared.
HE'S BEEN WAITING FOR YOU.
And beneath it was a photograph.
Martin.
May you like
Alive.
Taken three days ago.
