Chapter 14 - Nine Years

Claire could not breathe.

“What are you saying?”

Caleb's eyes filled with regret.

“Martin died six months before the date on his death certificate.”

The world seemed to tilt.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“That is impossible.”

“Your husband wanted you to believe he had more time.”

“Why?”

“Because he needed those six months to build the delayed system.”

Claire stared.

“You mean the messages?”

“The farmhouse.”

“The trust?”

“Yes.”

“The evidence?”

“Yes.”

“So who died nine years ago?”

Caleb answered quietly.

“Martin.”

Claire shook her head.

“You said six months.”

“Yes.”

“He died eight years and six months ago.”

Caleb nodded.

“And someone made it appear otherwise.”

Claire's thoughts raced.

Insurance.

Bank accounts.

Property.

The funeral.

She remembered everything.

Martin had looked different.

Paler.

Thinner.

But grief had blinded her.

“Why would someone fake his death date?”

“To conceal where he had been.”

“Where?”

“Under medical protection.”

Nora explained.

“Martin had been receiving treatment in another state.”

Claire stared.

“From whom?”

“Dr. Nathan Bell.”

“The same doctor.”

“Yes.”

“Why hide it?”

“Because Peter was trying to access the trust.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Everything came together.

Peter couldn't control the trust while Martin remained competent.

So Martin disappeared medically.

Then his delayed system was built.

But there was more.

Claire looked at Caleb.

“You said my husband's brother was involved.”

Caleb nodded.

“He was the one who helped move the original documents.”

“Why?”

“Because he believed Peter would kill Martin.”

“And did Peter?”

“No.”

Claire's voice cracked.

“Then who caused Martin's death?”

“His illness.”

The answer was almost unbearable.

Martin had not been murdered.

He had known he was dying.

He had hidden the truth because he believed his family would be destroyed if Peter knew.

Claire wiped her eyes.

“Why didn't he tell me?”

“Because he knew you would stay.”

“Of course I would.”

“And that was exactly what he feared.”

Nora quietly added, “He wanted you to survive him, not spend your last months of his life fighting beside him.”

Claire covered her face.

For years she had wondered why Martin had suddenly become distant.

Why he had been secretive.

Why he had spent hours in the study.

Why he had looked at her like he was memorizing her face.

Now she understood.

He was saying goodbye without telling her.

Caleb removed a second envelope from his coat.

“He asked me to give you this when you were ready.”

Claire accepted it.

Inside was a photograph of Martin in a hospital.

He looked tired.

But he was smiling.

On the back:

I wanted one picture where you remembered me as alive.

Claire began to cry.

Then she saw another photograph.

A woman standing beside him.

Young.

Pregnant.

Nora.

Claire looked up.

“You had a child with my husband?”

Nora's face went pale.

“No.”

“Then why were you with him?”

“Because Martin wasn't the father.”

“Who was?”

Caleb.

Claire stared.

Caleb nodded.

“Nora and I had a child twenty years ago.”

“Why did Martin know?”

“Because he helped us hide the child.”

“From Peter?”

“Yes.”

“Where is he now?”

Caleb hesitated.

“Close.”

Claire's heart pounded.

“Who is he?”

Before Caleb could answer, a vehicle screeched outside the farmhouse.

Three men got out.

Nora grabbed Claire.

“Inside.”

Gunfire cracked through the air.

Windows shattered.

Samuel pulled Claire behind the desk.

Caleb returned fire.

The men ran toward the barn.

Then one voice shouted:

“Claire!”

She recognized it.

Peter.

He should have been in federal custody.

Yet he was there.

Alive.

May you like

Armed.

And coming for her.
