Chapter 28 - The House Beneath the House

They returned to Greenwich that night.
Claire couldn't stop staring out the car window.
The word HOME no longer felt comforting.
It felt like a threat.
Michael sat beside her.
“You don't have to go inside.”
“Yes, I do.”
“Why?”
“Because whoever sent that message wants me there.”
Wesley looked forward.
“Then we choose the location.”
Jonathan nodded.
“We don't go through the front door.”
But when they arrived, the front door was already open.
Claire's blood ran cold.
Nobody moved.
The house was dark.
Then the brass clock chimed.
One.
Two.
Three.
Claire whispered:
“6:17.”
The clock had stopped again.
Wesley looked at the study.
“Mom.”
“I know.”
They entered.
Nothing appeared disturbed.
The dining room was clean.
The study looked untouched.
Claire walked to Martin's desk.
She opened the drawer.
Empty.
Then she remembered his final words from years earlier.
Home was wherever you are.
She stared at the floor beneath the desk.
“Move the rug.”
Wesley did.
A square outline appeared in the wood.
Jonathan knelt.
“There.”
Michael opened the panel.
A staircase descended.
Claire stared.
“There's a house beneath the house.”
They went down.
The underground room was enormous.
Concrete walls.
Rows of equipment.
Monitors.
Storage cabinets.
And dozens of photographs.
Claire stopped.
Every photograph documented her family.
Every year.
Every major event.
Every person they had met.
Someone had been watching them continuously.
Audrey whispered, “This is sick.”
Michael walked to a wall.
“This is where they coordinated surveillance.”
Jonathan opened a cabinet.
Inside were files.
One was labeled:
PROJECT HART.
Claire opened it.
The first page described Martin.
The second described Wesley.
The third described Audrey.
The fourth described Claire.
She turned another page.
Her signature appeared.
But this time, the document was real.
Claire remembered signing it.
Years ago.
At Martin's request.
It was a power of attorney.
But the next page changed everything.
The document had been altered after she signed it.
Words had been added.
Authorities.
Accounts.
Transfers.
Control of assets.
Claire's face burned.
“They forged everything.”
Michael shook his head.
“Not everything.”
He pointed to a computer.
“They needed one original authorization.”
Claire walked toward it.
The system displayed her biometric profile.
She touched the screen.
It opened.
A single folder appeared.
FINAL INSTRUCTIONS.
Inside was a video.
Martin.
Not alive.
But recorded before his death.
Claire pressed play.
“If you're seeing this, I've failed to destroy the network.”
Claire started crying.
“But I may have done something better.”
Martin looked directly into the camera.
“I built a trap.”
Jonathan leaned closer.
“The four hundred million was never the real target.”
Claire stared.
“What?”
Martin continued.
“I knew they would eventually force the transfer.”
The screen changed.
“Every dollar they move triggers a public disclosure system.”
Jonathan's face changed.
“The money was bait.”
Martin nodded.
“When the trust transfers the funds to the wrong account, every connected financial record is automatically copied to independent servers.”
Claire understood.
“You wanted them to steal it.”
“I wanted them to expose themselves.”
Martin's voice became softer.
“You may believe you failed.”
“You didn't.”
“The transfer they just completed has opened every door.”
Wesley looked at Jonathan.
“Can we prove it?”
Jonathan checked the system.
“Yes.”
He smiled.
“It's all here.”
Bank records.
Wire transfers.
Names.
Messages.
Instructions.
Everything.
The entire network had just incriminated itself.
Claire sat down.
“For nine years…”
Martin continued:
“I'm sorry.”
Claire looked at his face.
“I chose silence because I thought protecting you meant keeping you ignorant.”
He paused.
“I was wrong.”
Claire cried harder.
“The truth should have belonged to you from the beginning.”
The video ended.
Then a live notification appeared.
DOOR 3 OPEN.
Claire looked around.
“What is Door 3?”
Michael answered.
“The server room.”
The screen changed.
ADRIAN HART CONNECTED.
His face appeared.
He looked almost exactly like Martin.
Older.
Calmer.
Cold.
“Hello, Claire.”
She stared.
“You're my brother.”
Adrian smiled.
“Yes.”
“Why did you do this?”
“Because Martin chose you.”
“And that mattered?”
“Everything Martin did mattered.”
He leaned closer to the camera.
“He stole what belonged to us.”
“Us?”
“Our family.”
“Your family tried to destroy mine.”
Adrian's expression hardened.
“You still don't understand.”
“What?”
“Martin wasn't the hero.”
Claire felt a chill.
“He was the one who started all of it.”
“What are you talking about?”
Adrian smiled.
“Ask him.”
“That man on the recording?”
“No.”
Adrian's gaze shifted.
“Ask the man standing beside you.”
Claire slowly turned.
Michael stood behind her.
His face was pale.
Adrian spoke again.
“Your brother isn't Michael.”
Claire stopped breathing.
May you like
Michael raised his gun.
And the lights went out.
