Chapter 90 - The Final Boarding Call

The international departure terminal at Madrid-Barajas Airport was flooded with morning sunlight. Glass, polished steel, and the steady hum of travelers hurrying to their gates created a sense of normalcy that felt entirely foreign after the last three weeks of running through shadows.

Lind stood near the security checkpoint, wearing a dark wool coat that hid the bandage around his ribs. He carried a single canvas duffel.

"The Spanish authorities cleared me through the transit gate," Lind said, extending his hand. "I’m taking a flight to Athens, then on to Cyprus. Roland’s secondary network still has some loose ends that need auditing before the federal prosecutors can close the file."

I took his hand, gripping it firmly. "Thank you, Lind. For keeping Arthur's word."

"Arthur was lucky to have you, Myrna," Lind said, a faint smile touching his worn face. "Most people would have folded the morning that red folder landed on the porch."

"I spent forty years letting people take advantage of my quiet nature," I replied, adjusting the strap of my leather purse. "That ended the day I bought my ticket to Lisbon."

We parted without further ceremony. I walked through the security lane, boarded the Boeing 777 bound for Boston Logan, and took my seat in row 12 by the window.

As the massive jet lifted into the pale European sky, banking westward over the Atlantic, I looked down at the retreating coastline. I had started this journey trying to escape the entitlement of an ungrateful family who thought they could dump their responsibilities on my doorstep and leave me behind. I had ended up unraveling a forty-year-old criminal empire and dismantling the web of lies my son had built his life upon.

I closed my eyes and slept for seven hours straight—the deepest, most peaceful sleep I had known since Arthur had died.

When the pilot announced our descent into Boston, the sky was slate gray, thick with the promise of late winter snow. The flight attendants collected the trash, the cabin chimes sounded, and the wheels touched the asphalt with a sharp, heavy thud.

I was back on American soil. And the reckoning was waiting on Route 9.
