Chapter 9 - Tori Takes to the Group Chat

By the fifth day of our trip, Tori’s desperation had metastasized into outright warfare. Unable to bully Patrice and unable to guilt-trip me privately, she decided to weaponize the extended Carter family group chat.
The chat included my sister Evelyn, Caleb’s cousins, my brother-in-law, and several close family friends—over fourteen people in total.
At 2:00 p.m. Lisbon time, as Linda and I were browsing a ceramic shop in the Chiado district, my phone lit up with a massive block of text.
**Tori:** *“I never thought I would have to air private family matters, but I am heartbroken and devastated. Caleb and I planned this once-in-a-lifetime trip to celebrate our tenth anniversary, and both grandmothers promised to support us. Instead, Myrna abandoned our four small children on the street to fly off to Europe without telling anyone, and my own mother has essentially extorted thousands of dollars from our bank account while threatening to involve authorities. It is heartbreaking when the people you trust most abandon your babies for selfish luxuries.”*
Attached were three photos: one of Maggie looking sad (clearly taken months ago during a tantrum), one of Leo crying in his car seat, and a screenshot of the credit card charge from Patrice.
For ten minutes, the group chat sat in stunned silence. Nobody knew how to respond to such a dramatic public grenade.
Then, Patrice entered the chat.
Patrice didn't write an emotional paragraph. She didn't call Tori names. She simply uploaded three files:
First: A screenshot of my flight confirmation email to Lisbon, clearly showing that the trip had been booked five months ago, with Caleb’s email address CC'd on the original receipt.
Second: A screenshot of the text message Tori had sent to Caleb three days before departure, which Patrice had extracted from Caleb’s iPad back at their house:
*“Just don’t mention Portugal to Myrna again. If we drop them off at 6:30 with all their bags packed, she won’t dare leave them. She’s too soft-hearted. We save $3k on babysitting.”*
Third: A timestamped video taken by Patrice’s Ring doorbell camera at 8:05 a.m. the morning of their flight. In the video, I was standing on Patrice’s porch, carrying suitcases, with four children who had been dumped at my door less than ninety minutes earlier.
Beside the video, Patrice wrote a single sentence:
*“The children are currently eating homemade chicken pot pie, have completed their homework, and are playing board games. If anyone in this family wishes to contribute to the childcare fund that Tori and Caleb refused to budget for, my Venmo is linked below.”*
The silence in the chat was broken instantly.
**Aunt Evelyn:** *“Tori, you should be utterly ashamed of yourself.”*
**Cousin Mark:** *“Wait, you tried to trap Aunt Myrna so you wouldn't have to pay a babysitter?! That is insane.”*
**Cousin Sarah:** *“Sending Patrice $50 right now for pizza. Good for you, Aunt Myrna! Enjoy Portugal!”*

I stood in the sunlit ceramic shop, holding a painted rooster in my hand, and laughed so hard tears rolled down my cheeks.
Tori had attempted a public execution, but all she had done was hand Patrice the rope to hang her own reputation. Within five minutes, Tori left the family group chat.
