Chapter 48 - The Ledger of 1988

The Mercedes sped away from the airport, weaving through the morning traffic of the Segunda Circular before taking the expressway west toward the rolling green hills of Sintra.

I sat back against the leather seat, my hands finally betraying me with a violent tremble. Duarte handed me a small thermos of hot, sweet black coffee.

"Arthur’s message reached me forty minutes before your flight landed," Duarte said, his voice deep and solemn. "I used an old maritime lien against Vance’s former holding company to trigger an administrative border hold. But Julian Vance has deep pockets and international attorneys. The airport police cannot legally detain him for more than ninety minutes without formal criminal charges."

"He doesn't want money, Duarte," I said, setting the coffee down and pulling Arthur’s handwritten letter from my bag. "He wants the canister Arthur hid in New Hampshire. He claims Arthur stole forty million dollars in bearer bonds from his father's firm in 1988."

Duarte looked at the letter, his brow furrowing deeply. He didn't look surprised.

"He didn't steal them, Myrna," Duarte said quietly.

I froze, turning to look at my husband’s oldest confidant. "What are you talking about?"

"In 1988, the Vance family wasn't just running a shipping firm," Duarte explained, looking out the tinted window as the ancient palaces of Sintra began to appear on the mountain ridgelines above us. "They were laundering illicit capital for international cartels, using container ships to move untraceable wealth. Arthur discovered it when he was auditing the manifests. When the *Mariner’s Hope* was deliberately scuttled to claim an insurance payout, Arthur intercepted the trust bonds to keep them from being used to fund an offshore empire."

"Why didn't he give them to the police?"

"Because the police departments were compromised, the federal prosecutors were in Vance's pocket, and Arthur knew that if he turned them over, he would end up dead in a ditch," Duarte said fiercely. "He buried them as an insurance policy. A dead man's trigger. If Vance ever came after his family, the ledger inside that canister contained the complete financial forensic trail that would destroy the entire Vance dynasty forever."

I closed my eyes, the weight of Arthur's secret pressing down on my chest. Arthur hadn't hidden a fortune to get rich. He had buried a nuclear weapon beneath our home to keep us safe.

And now, Vance was willing to destroy my grandchildren just to disarm it.
