Chapter 75 - The Puppet’s Confession

They hid us in the auxiliary steering compartment near the stern, a cramped, deafening chamber smelling of hydraulic oil and iron. The steady, low thrum of the ship’s engines vibrated up through the deck plates as the *Navegador* pulled anchor and set its course south toward the Mediterranean.

Lind sat on an overturned crate, field-stripping his damp sidearm with meticulous precision, while I wrapped a rough wool blanket around my shoulders and sat against a bulkhead.

In my lap, the phone finally found a fleeting signal off a coastal repeater tower. The screen flooded with nineteen missed calls, twelve voicemails, and a cascade of text messages.

None of them were from Arthur's old allies. They were from Caleb.

I pressed the voicemail icon. Caleb’s voice came through the tiny speaker, trembling, broken, and stripped of the smug arrogance he had worn for the last five years.

*"Mom... please, God, pick up. Where are you? Tori and I... we’re still at the hotel in Shinjuku. The police came to our room an hour ago. Not Japanese police—two men from an American firm. They had papers with Arthur's signature, Mom. And mine."*

There was a ragged breath on the recording, followed by the sound of Tori sobbing hysterically in the background.

*"They told me... they told me that if you didn't hand over the red binder, the debt was mine. Mom, I didn't know! When Tori dropped the kids at your porch... she didn't just want a vacation. Roland’s lawyer contacted her three weeks ago. They offered to pay off our mortgage—all five hundred thousand—if she could guarantee you’d be trapped at the farmhouse for two weeks straight without checking your mail or leaving the county!"*

A cold, hard knot formed in my stomach.

I listened to my son’s voice, the boy I had bandaged, fed, loved, and defended, confessing that his wife had traded my freedom—my life—for a mortgage payoff. Tori had stood on my gravel driveway at six-thirty in the morning, holding out that duffel bag with that smug, entitled smirk, knowing she was locking me in a cage for Roland Vance.

*"Mom, they’ve seized our passports,"* Caleb wept, his voice cracking into total panic. *"They said if you don't call Roland's office by morning, Tori and I are going to be arrested for international wire fraud. Mom, please! Think of the kids! You can't just leave us here!"*

The message ended.

I stared at the glowing screen for a long, quiet moment. Then, slowly, deliberately, I turned the phone face down on the iron deck.

"You're not going to call him back?" Lind asked quietly, not looking up from his gun.

"My son made a business transaction," I said, my voice dead and steady. "He sold his mother for five hundred thousand dollars. Now he can find out what Roland's currency is worth."
