Chapter 118 - The Anatomy of a Collapse

"Vacate?!" Caleb’s voice hit a pitch that was almost unrecognizable. "Vacate our home?! Where are we supposed to live?! Where are the kids supposed to go?!"

"You have four children, Caleb," I said, my voice hardening into granite. "The same four children your wife dumped on my doorstep at 6:30 in the morning like bags of trash. The same children she expected me to feed, wash, and raise while she took spa treatments in Tokyo. You didn't care where I was supposed to live when you planned to let your father steal the family estate. You didn't care about my comfort, my health, or my future."

"Mom, that was Tori's idea!" Caleb sobbed, shameless in his desperation. "I told her not to leave the kids with you! I told her you were tired! She forced me, Mom! You know how she is!"

Suddenly, the phone was ripped away from him on the other end. Tori’s screeching voice burst through the speaker like broken glass.

"Martha! You listen to me, you vindictive old bitch!" Tori shrieked. "You can't do this! You are their grandmother! We will sue you! We will take you to court for child neglect, for emotional distress, for everything you have! Do you hear me?!"

"Tori," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "Have you checked your personal checking account in the last hour?"

The line went silent for a beat.

"What?" Tori stammered.

"Your father’s car dealership in Nashua," I continued. "The line of credit he used to keep that business floating for the last five years? It wasn't backed by a bank. It was backed by a secondary pledge from the Pendleton Trust, guaranteed by Arthur. With the trust frozen and Arthur in federal custody in Bern, the commercial lenders called the note at two o'clock this afternoon. Your parents are bankrupt, Tori. And Caleb’s logistics firm has no credit left to buy fuel for tomorrow’s deliveries."

I could hear Tori’s breath hitching, a sickening gasp as the full weight of the catastrophe hit her.

"You... you ruined us," she whispered.

"No," I replied coldly. "You ruined yourselves the moment you decided that my kindness was weakness. You thought I was an old woman with nowhere to go and nothing to live for. You forgot that everything you had—the house, the cars, the status, the vacations—existed only because I allowed Arthur to manage my family's heritage. The show is over, Tori. Pack your bags, take your children, and find an apartment you can actually afford."

"Mom, please!" Caleb’s voice broke back in, weeping openly. "Mom, don't do this to me! What am I supposed to tell the kids?!"

"Tell them their grandmother is having tea in Switzerland," I said. "And that she finally took her vacation."

I hung up, tapped the screen twice, and permanently blocked both of their numbers.
