Chapter 6 - The Ghost of the Past

Two weeks passed, and the underworld of New York shifted under Alessandro's tightened grip.

Rosa and Lily had not returned to the small, leaky apartment in Queens.

Instead, Alessandro had moved them into the VIP guest wing of the estate.

One rainy afternoon, Alessandro found Rosa in the library, staring at a picture in a newspaper.

It was an article about a corrupt construction union being busted by the FBI.

Alessandro saw the sadness in her eyes and gently pulled the paper away.

"Miguel worked for that site, didn't he?" Alessandro asked, his voice gentle.

Rosa nodded, wiping a stray tear from her cheek.

"He disappeared eighteen months ago."

Alessandro took a deep breath, knowing he had to confess the truth.

"Rosa, Luca controlled that union," he said, watching her face pale.

"When I interrogated Luca's men last week, they confessed to silencing workers who found out about their money laundering."

Rosa covered her mouth as a sob wrecked her chest.

"Miguel was a good man," she cried.

Alessandro pulled her into his arms, letting her cry against his chest.

"I know," he whispered into her hair.

"And I promise you, those who hurt him will spend the rest of their lives rotting in federal prison."
