Chapter 4: The Ripple Effect

Back at the Bellamy residence, the aftermath of Clara’s departure was far from quiet. Julian sat at the polished mahogany dining table, his tuxedo jacket discarded on a chair, staring at the empty space across from him.
""You should have stopped her before she reached the foyer, Julian,"" Victoria said, pacing the room with a porcelain teacup in hand. ""The Prescott family was watching. Evelyn’s father has already called asking why our family appears unstable.""
Julian looked up at his mother, a sudden wave of nausea rising in his throat. ""She left because we treated her like a piece of decorative furniture, Mother. Because I let you dictate our future.""
""Do not be dramatic,"" Victoria snapped. ""She was an architect with modest background whom we welcomed into our inner circle. She owed this family loyalty.""
""She designed the entire maritime development project that saved our quarterly earnings last year!"" Julian’s voice rose, cracking with an anger he had suppressed since childhood. ""And yesterday, we signed over her patents to Evelyn’s firm without even telling her.""
Evelyn, sitting quietly on the sofa, shifted uncomfortably. ""Julian, it was a strategic merger. It wasn't personal.""

Julian looked between his mother and Evelyn. For the first time in his life, the gilded walls of the estate felt less like a fortress and more like a gilded cage built on compromises he was no longer sure he could defend.
