Chapter 11: Groundbreaking

By spring, the municipal funding for the Oakhaven Community Center was officially approved.

The groundbreaking ceremony was a community-wide celebration. There were no black-tie dress codes, champagne flutes, or political photo-ops. Instead, long picnic tables were set up with homemade food, and children from the local elementary school painted colorful wooden stakes to mark the boundaries of the future library and workshop areas.

Clara stood alongside Marcus and Maya, holding a simple steel shovel. When Marcus handed her the microphone, Clara looked out at the gathered crowd—faces of people who had welcomed her with honesty, held her accountable, and shared their lives with her.

""A building is only as strong as the purpose behind it,"" Clara said to the crowd. ""We aren't just pouring concrete here today. We are building a space where every person in this town has a seat, a voice, and a shelter. Thank you for letting me build it with you.""

As the crowd cheered, Clara drove the shovel into the earth. The sound of applause was grounded, warm, and real.
