Chapter 5 - The Unlocking of the Past

The morning sun broke through the storm clouds, casting a brilliant, warm golden light across the estate gardens.
At three-fifty-five in the afternoon, Dante stood in the grand third-floor corridor.
He was dressed in a sharp dark suit, his hands resting naturally at his sides. Standing beside him was Rosa, holding a small silver key in her hand. And standing between them, holding both of their hands, was Sophia, wearing a bright pink dress with a big yellow bow in her hair.
They stood in front of the locked mahogany door of Carmela's sitting room.
For eighteen months, this door had been a monument of grief, guilt, and pain.
Dante looked down at Rosa, taking a deep, calm breath. "It's time."
Rosa smiled warmly, squeezing his hand. "We do it together."
Rosa handed him the silver key. Dante stepped forward, inserted the key into the old brass lock, and turned it.
CLICK.
The heavy mahogany door swung open smoothly.
Inside, the room was bathed in warm afternoon sunlight streaming through the stained-glass windows. Dust motes danced in the air. The room was beautiful—filled with paintings of golden flower fields, a grand piano, and shelves of old books.
It wasn't a place of death. It was a place of memory, peace, and quiet beauty.
Sophia trotted into the room first, her tiny shoes clicking against the hardwood floor. She walked right up to the grand piano, looking at the silver-framed photograph sitting on top of the instrument.
The photograph showed a younger Dante smiling beside a beautiful, dark-haired woman—Carmela.
Sophia looked at the photo, then turned back to Dante, who was standing in the doorway with Rosa's arm wrapped gently around his waist.
"Is that your angel lady?" Sophia asked innocently.
Dante walked slowly into the room, kneeling beside the piano next to Sophia. He looked at the photograph of his late wife, feeling no sharp stab of agonizing pain—only a deep, quiet gratitude for the time they had shared.
"Yes, little one," Dante murmured softly, gently placing his hand on Sophia’s shoulder. "That was Carmela. She was a very kind angel."
"Is she happy you smile now?" Sophia asked, looking up into his face.
Dante looked at the photograph one last time, seeing the peaceful expression on Carmela’s face in the portrait.
"Yes, Sophia," Dante whispered, a single tear of true closure slipping down his cheek. "I know she is."
He stood up, turning to look at Rosa, who stood waiting for him with a beautiful, radiant smile.
Dante took Rosa’s hand, pulling her close to his side, wrapping his arm around her waist as they looked around the sunlit room.

"This room will no longer be locked," Dante announced softly. "We will turn it into an art studio for you and a playroom for Sophia."
Rosa looked up at him, her eyes filled with tears of happiness. "Dante... it's perfect."
