Chapter 2 - The Shadows of the Syndicate

Two weeks had passed since the afternoon that changed everything inside the Falcone estate.

The atmosphere in the grand stone mansion had undergone a quiet, remarkable transformation. The heavy, oppressive silence had lifted. Small laughter echoed through the high-ceilinged rooms, and for the first time in years, fresh yellow roses—Carmela’s favorite flowers—were placed in delicate crystal vases along the main dining hall.

Rosa Bennett stood in the third-floor private study, placing a tray of fresh porcelain coffee cups beside Dante’s leather-bound ledgers.

She was wearing a new, dark navy linen dress—still simple, but tailored to flatter her full, hourglass figure. Over the past fourteen days, working closely in Dante's personal quarters had brought her face-to-face with the syndicate boss every single morning.

She had learned that behind his cold, formidable exterior lay a man of intense discipline, profound intellect, and a hidden warmth that only emerged when Sophia was around.

Every afternoon at exactly four o'clock, Dante stopped whatever he was doing—whether reviewing shipping manifests or holding private council with his lieutenants—to go for his daily walk. And right behind him, dutifully marching with her hands behind her back, was Sophia.

"You're quiet today, Rosa," Dante’s deep voice broke the quiet room.

Rosa jumped slightly, turning around to find Dante standing near the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the estate's sprawling pine forest. He had shed his suit jacket, wearing only a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, exposing the dark, intricate tattoos that stretched across his muscular skin.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Falcone," Rosa said softly, wiping down the edge of the mahogany desk. "I was just thinking about how much Sophia talks about you. She insists on calling you 'Big Mister' now instead of 'Grumpy Mister'."

Dante let out a low, soft chuckle—a sound that still sent a strange, pleasant shiver straight down Rosa’s spine.

"It is an improvement," Dante acknowledged, walking over to the coffee tray. He poured himself a cup, his dark eyes meeting hers over the rim. "She brings life back to these empty halls, Rosa. And... so do you."

Rosa felt a sudden, warm flush spread across her cheeks. She quickly looked down at her hands. "I am just doing my job, sir. I am grateful for your generosity. The raise has allowed me to pay off my medical bills from Sophia’s birth."

Dante took a slow step closer to her. Up close, he smelled of cedarwood, rich tobacco, and expensive espresso. He looked down at her, his gaze lingering on the soft curve of her waist and the gentle, beautiful warmth of her hazel eyes.

Unlike the high-fashion, needle-thin socialites who used to frequent his estate seeking his favor, Rosa possessed a natural, earthly beauty that felt genuine, comforting, and deeply alluring.

"You don't need to thank me, Rosa," Dante murmured, his voice dropping into an intimate register. "You gave this house a heart again when I thought mine was dead forever."

Before Rosa could reply, the heavy double oak doors of the study flew open without a knock.

A tall, glamorous woman dressed in a sleek red designer suit swept into the room. Her dark hair was styled in a sharp bob, her red lips curved into a cold, arrogant sneer.

It was Marina—Carmela’s younger sister, and the head of the Falcone family's political lobbying network.

"Dante!" Marina declared loudly, her high heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor. "The syndicate council is demanding an emergency meeting! The Moretti family is moving their shipments onto our northern docks, and you are sitting here playing house with..."

Marina stopped mid-sentence, her icy blue eyes dropping down to assess Rosa from head to toe. Her lip curled in immediate, unfiltered disgust.

"What is this?" Marina spat, looking at Rosa as if she were a dirty rag left on the floor. "Why is a servant standing in Carmela’s private study? And why is there a toddler’s plastic toy sitting on my late sister's mahogany desk?!"

Rosa immediately backed away, bowing her head. "I am sorry, ma'am. I will leave—"

"Stay right where you are, Rosa," Dante commanded coldly, his voice instantly shifting into the sharp, terrifying tone of the Falcone syndicate head.

Marina blinked in disbelief. "Dante! Are you insane?! The Moretti family is preparing for war, and you are taking orders from a fat maid?!"

Dante moved so fast he seemed like a shadow.

In less than a second, he was standing inches away from Marina, his towering frame casting a dark, terrifying shadow over her. His eyes burned with an icy, murderous fury that made even the arrogant socialite take a involuntary step backward.

"Watch your mouth, Marina," Dante whispered, his voice dangerously soft. "Rosa Bennett is the head supervisor of this floor. And if you ever speak to her, or about her daughter, in that tone again... I will strip you of your council seat and banish you from this estate forever."

Marina’s face turned bright red with rage and embarrassment. "You are forgetting who died for you, Dante! My sister gave her life for your throne! And you replace her memory with a peasant?!"

"Carmela died because of a war that I am trying to finish!" Dante growled, his fists clenching at his sides. "And Carmela would have hated what you have become—a bitter snake using her memory to control my house!"

Marina glared at Rosa with absolute, poisonous hatred before turning on her heel and storming out of the study, slamming the heavy doors behind her with a deafening crash.

Rosa stood trembling near the desk, her heart pounding in her chest.

Dante turned back to her, taking a long, deep breath to control his breathing. He walked over to Rosa, his expression softening instantly as he reached out and gently rested his large, warm hand over her shaking fingers.

"I am sorry you had to hear that, Rosa," Dante said gently.

"Is... is there going to be a war, Mr. Falcone?" Rosa asked, her voice trembling as she looked up into his dark eyes. "Are we in danger?"

May you like

Dante looked at her, his grip on her hand tightening reassuringly.

"No one touches anyone in this house while I am alive, Rosa," Dante promised, his voice filled with absolute, unyielding authority. "I protected this city for ten years. Now, I will protect you and Sophia."
