Chapter 3 - The Ambush at the Gates

The rainy autumn weather had set in over Chicago, wrapping the Falcone estate in a thick, grey blanket of fog.
Despite the mounting political tension between the Falcone syndicate and the rival Moretti clan, life inside the third-floor private quarters remained a peaceful sanctuary.
Dante had taken to having his breakfast at the small kitchen table with Rosa and Sophia every morning. The sight of the formidable underworld boss sitting in a simple cotton shirt, eating strawberry pancakes while Sophia drew funny purple monsters on his napkins, had become the new normal.
Rosa felt her heart opening up in ways she had never thought possible.
For years, she had been told by her ex-husband and society that she was too plain, too large, and too ordinary to deserve real love. But when Dante looked at her, he didn't see an ordinary servant. He saw a strong, resilient, beautiful woman. His eyes followed her movement across the room with a quiet, intense hunger that made her skin tingle with electric warmth.
It was three o'clock on a Tuesday afternoon when the peace was shattered.
Dante was in the lower courtyard reviewing security detail with his chief enforcer, Marco, while Rosa was upstairs folding fresh linens in the third-floor sitting room. Sophia was playing near the grand bay window with a wooden doll Dante had bought for her the day before.
Suddenly, a loud, sharp explosion rattled the glass windows!
BOOM!
The heavy iron gates at the front of the estate shook as black smoke rose into the grey sky. Automatic gunfire echoed across the manicured lawns.
"Mommy!" Sophia screamed, dropping her doll and running into Rosa’s arms.
Rosa’s instincts kicked in instantly. She scooped Sophia up into her arms, pressing her child’s head against her shoulder, her heart pounding with sheer terror.
"It's okay, baby! Mommy's got you!" Rosa whispered frantically, backing away from the windows toward the inner hallway.
The heavy oak doors of the sitting room burst open.
It wasn't Dante.
It was three heavily armed men in dark tactical gear, carrying assault rifles, their faces covered in black ski masks. Behind them stood Marco—the chief enforcer—his gun drawn, pointing directly at Rosa!
Rosa gasped, her blood running cold. "Marco... what are you doing?!"
Marco smiled—a sick, greedy grin. "Sorry, Rosa. The Moretti family pays three times what Falcone offers. And Marina made it very easy for us to disable the northern perimeter security."
"Marina..." Rosa gasped. The sister-in-law had betrayed Dante to the rival clan!
"Grab the kid," Marco ordered his men. "The Moretti boss wants Falcone's new little favorite as leverage to force him to sign over the shipping docks."
One of the masked men stepped forward, reaching his gloved hand toward Sophia!
"DON'T YOU TOUCH MY DAUGHTER!" Rosa screamed with a wild, motherly fury she didn't know she possessed.
Without hesitation, Rosa swung her heavy silver linen tray with all her strength, smashing it straight into the masked man’s face! The heavy metal struck his nose with a loud CRACK, sending him staggering backward, blood spraying across the floor!
"You stupid bitch!" Marco roared, raising his pistol toward Rosa’s chest.
Before he could pull the trigger, a dark silhouette burst through the second-story balcony window behind them in a shower of flying glass!
It was Dante!
Dante landed on his feet like an enraged predator, a heavy silver caliber pistol gleaming in his hand.
STAT! STAT!
Two rapid shots echoed through the room. The two masked men collapsed to the floor instantly.
Marco spun around in sheer panic, raising his weapon, but Dante was already upon him. Dante grabbed Marco’s wrist, twisting it upward with brutal force until the bone snapped like a dry twig. Marco shrieked in agony as the gun clattered to the floor.
Dante slammed Marco against the stone wall, pressing the hot barrel of his pistol directly against Marco’s throat.
"You dared to bring weapons near my family?" Dante roared, his eyes glowing with an terrifying, demon-like rage.
"Dante... please! Marina paid me! She promised—" Marco begged frantically.
"Goodbye, traitor," Dante whispered coldly.
BANG.
The room went completely silent except for the sound of rain beating against the broken glass balcony.
Dante turned around instantly, stepping over the fallen bodies, his eyes darting frantically to where Rosa sat on the floor, holding Sophia tightly against her chest, her body shaking with violent sobs.
"Rosa!" Dante dropped his gun and fell to his knees in front of them, pulling both of them into his massive, protective embrace.
His arms wrapped tightly around Rosa's soft, trembling shoulders, his hand cradling the back of Sophia’s head as he pressed desperate kisses against Rosa’s hair, her forehead, and her cheek.
"Are you hurt? Did they touch you?" Dante rasped, his deep voice shaking with a terrifying vulnerability he had never shown to any living soul.
"We're... we're okay," Rosa sobbed, burying her face into the crook of his warm neck, smelling the familiar scent of cedarwood and espresso. "Sophia is safe... Dante, she's safe..."
May you like
Dante held them close, burying his face in Rosa’s hair, his chest heaving as he held the two people who had become his entire world.
"I will kill every single one of them," Dante vowed softly into her ear, his voice trembling with deep, fierce love. "I will burn the Moretti family to ash for touching you."
