Chapter 6 - You Are My Sunshine

Six months later.

The early summer sun poured over the manicured lawns and blooming yellow rose gardens of the Moretti estate in Long Island. The dark, cold atmosphere of the past had completely vanished, replaced by the bright, joyful laughter of a child echoing across the oceanfront terrace.

The Moretti empire had undergone a massive, historical transformation. With Giorgio and his conspirators facing life sentences in federal prison, Lorenzo had systematically dismantled the family's illegal operations, transitioning every division into legitimate global philanthropy, renewable energy, and maritime shipping.

On the sun-drenched marble terrace overlooking the ocean, a grand round table was set for breakfast with fresh berries, warm pastries, and silver pots of coffee.

Clara sat in a comfortable wicker chair, wearing an elegant cream-colored silk dress that accentuated her natural, quiet beauty. Her eyes were bright, her skin glowing, the dark circles of fatigue and poverty that had haunted her for years completely gone.

Sitting beside her was Lorenzo Moretti.

He looked healthier and stronger than ever, wearing a tailored navy linen shirt, his dark hair cut sharp, his steel-gray eyes filled with a deep, peaceful warmth that few people had ever seen before.

And running across the green lawn, chasing a colorful butterfly with her stuffed rabbit clutched under her arm, was four-year-old Mia.

"Mia! Don't run too close to the flower beds!" Clara called out with a loving laugh.

"I'm catching a rainbow, Mama!" Mia shouted back, her bright little voice filling the morning air.

Lorenzo chuckled softly, taking a sip of his black coffee before setting the cup down on the saucer. He turned his head, looking at Clara with an expression of profound tenderness.

"She never stops moving, does she?" Lorenzo smiled.

"Never," Clara said, looking at him with a soft smile. "Her teacher at the new academy said she's the most energetic child in her class."

Lorenzo reached across the white table, his large, warm hand gently covering Clara’s fingers.

"And you, Clara?" Lorenzo asked softly, his eyes searching hers. "How are you adjusting to running the Moretti Foundation?"

Clara looked down at their joined hands, feeling a wonderful warmth spread through her heart. Three months ago, Lorenzo had appointed Clara as the Chief Executive Director of the newly established James Bennett Memorial Foundation—an organization funded with fifty million dollars to provide housing, education, and financial support to widowed mothers and struggling families across New York.

"It's... incredible, Lorenzo," Clara said, her voice thick with emotion. "Yesterday, we approved sixty new housing grants for mothers in Queens. I used to be one of those women sleeping on laundromat floors... and now we're giving them a real home."

"You did that, Clara," Lorenzo said firmly. "You saved my life. You gave me a reason to wake up when everything around me was poison. This foundation... this new life... it’s all because of you and Mia."

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box, placing it on the table between them.

Clara held her breath, her heart giving a sudden, joyful flutter. "Lorenzo... what is this?"

Lorenzo opened the box.

Inside rested a stunning platinum ring set with a flawless, radiant yellow diamond that caught the morning sunlight like a drop of liquid sunshine.

"When I was lying in that dark room," Lorenzo said quietly, his voice deep and filled with sincere emotion, "I swore to myself that if I ever survived, I would spend the rest of my life protecting the people who brought light back into my world. I don't want to just be your boss, Clara. I don't want to just be the man whose life you saved."

He looked into her hazel eyes with an intensity that took her breath away.

"I want to be a father to Mia," Lorenzo whispered. "And I want to be a husband to you. Will you marry me, Clara?"

Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness spilled down Clara’s cheeks. She looked at the ring, then looked up at the man who had turned from a terrifying crime boss into the gentlest, most protective guardian she and her daughter had ever known.

"Yes," Clara sobbed happily, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Lorenzo! A thousand times yes!"

Lorenzo pulled her tightly against his chest, wrapping his arms around her, kissing her hair as she wept tears of joy.

"Mama! Mister Lorenzo!" Mia shouted, running up the terrace stairs with her sneakers clicking against the stone floor. She stopped near the table, holding up her stuffed rabbit with a big, proud grin. "Look! Bunny found a yellow flower!"

Lorenzo broke the embrace, laughing as he reached down and lifted Mia up in one arm, pulling both mother and daughter close to his heart.

"That's a beautiful flower, little captain," Lorenzo said softly, kissing Mia’s forehead.

Mia looked at the two of them, then pointed her tiny finger at Lorenzo’s bright yellow diamond ring sitting in the open box.

"Is that a sunshine ring?" Mia asked innocently.

Clara wiped a joyful tear from her eye, leaning her head against Lorenzo’s strong shoulder. "Yes, baby. It's a sunshine ring."

Mia wrapped her arms around Lorenzo’s neck, resting her head against his cheek, and began softly singing in her sweet, imperfect little voice:

May you like

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine... You make me happy when skies are gray..."

Lorenzo closed his eyes, holding his new family tightly in his arms under the bright, endless summer sky, knowing with absolute certainty that the dark shadows of his past were gone forever, replaced by the brilliant, beautiful light of a second chance.
