Chapter 2 - The Shadow at the Door

The door swung inward with a faint, ominous click.

Clara Bennett stood in the hallway, her face completely drained of color, her apron clutched tightly in her trembling hands.

"Mia!" Clara gasped in a harsh, panicked whisper.

The little girl turned her head on the velvet chair, looking over her shoulder with wide, innocent hazel eyes. "Hi, Mama! I was just telling the mister about the magic wall!"

Clara rushed across the room as fast as her legs could carry her, snatching Mia off the chair and tucking her firmly against her hip. She looked down at Lorenzo Moretti’s motionless face, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

The man was still as stone. The green line on the heart monitor flickered steadily, showing a calm, rhythmic pattern.

"Sweetheart, what did I tell you?" Clara pleaded softly, her voice shaking as she backed toward the door, holding her child like a shield. "You cannot be in here. If Miss Isabella sees us, we will be thrown out onto the street tonight!"

"But Mama, the mister was listening!" Mia insisted, hugging her stuffed rabbit against Clara’s shoulder. "His fingers twitched! Look!"

Clara glanced down at Lorenzo’s right hand, resting on the white sheet. His long, calloused fingers were completely still.

"He’s sick, Mia. He can't hear us," Clara whispered, tears of pure exhaustion and terror shining in her eyes. "Please... we have to go."

As Clara turned toward the doorway, a towering figure stepped into the threshold, blocking the light from the hallway.

It was Giorgio Moretti.

He was forty years old, dressed in a sharp, bespoke charcoal suit that screamed wealth and authority. His dark hair was slicked back, his jaw clean-shaven, but his dark, deep-set eyes carried a cold, calculating stillness that instantly made the hair on the back of Clara’s neck stand up.

"Is there a problem here?" Giorgio asked, his voice smooth, deep, and entirely devoid of warmth.

Clara froze, taking a step back, instinctively tightening her arms around Mia.

"Mr. Moretti," Clara stammered, dropping her head in deep apology. "I am so sorry. I’m Clara... the new assistant housekeeper. My daughter... she wandered away while I was downstairs. I was just taking her back to the servants' wing."

Giorgio’s eyes moved slowly from Clara down to the three-year-old child. His gaze was cold, clinical, assessing them not as human beings, but as potential variables.

"Children shouldn't be on this floor," Giorgio said quietly. He stepped into the room, closing the heavy door behind him. The air in the room instantly felt ten degrees colder. "This floor is for my brother’s medical recovery. Disturbances can affect his heart rate."

"I know, sir. It will never happen again, I swear to you," Clara promised, her voice trembling. "We'll leave right now."

Giorgio didn't move from the doorway. He walked slowly toward the bedside, pulling a clean silk handkerchief from his pocket and idly wiping a speck of dust off the cardiac monitor.

"What were you talking about when you were coming down the hall, little girl?" Giorgio asked, his dark eyes fixing on Mia with sharp intensity. "I heard you mention a 'magic wall.'"

Clara’s heart stopped. She looked down at her daughter, a sudden wave of instinct warning her that whatever Mia had been talking about was dangerous.

"She’s three, Mr. Moretti," Clara blurted out quickly, stepping between Giorgio’s line of sight and her daughter. "She makes up stories all day long. Fairy tales, magical doors, talking rabbits... her imagination is very wild."

Giorgio stayed silent for three long seconds. The silence in the room was suffocating.

"Is that so?" Giorgio murmured softly. He reached out his hand, gently touching Mia’s cheek with the back of his fingers. His hand was cold, smelling faintly of expensive cologne and, just as Mia had said earlier, a sharp, metallic odor. "Wild imaginations can be troublesome, Mrs. Bennett. In a house like this, people who talk too much often find themselves out in the cold."

"We don't talk to anyone, sir," Clara said firmly, raising her chin, her maternal instincts completely overruling her fear. "We work, we stay in our room, and we mind our own business."

Giorgio studied Clara’s face for a long moment, seeing the desperate, fierce protection in the young mother's eyes.

"Good," Giorgio finally said, stepping aside from the door. "Isabella is waiting for you in the kitchen, Clara. Don't let your child wander again. The grounds outside are very large, and the ocean cliffs are quite steep. It would be a terrible tragedy if a little girl fell."

The unspoken threat was crystal clear.

Clara felt a chill run straight down her spine. "Thank you, Mr. Moretti."

She carried Mia out of the room as fast as she could without running, the heavy double doors clicking shut behind them.

Inside the quiet suite, Giorgio turned back to his brother’s bed. He stood over Lorenzo for a long time, staring down at the pale, unconscious face.

"You always were lucky, brother," Giorgio whispered, reaching into his inner coat pocket and running his fingers over the cold, cylindrical shape of the silencer hidden inside. "A three-year-old child and a widowed maid... that’s all you have left guarding your kingdom. In forty-eight hours, the board votes to give me permanent power of attorney. And then... a simple power outage in the medical suite will finally put you to rest."

May you like

Giorgio turned and walked out, locking the heavy suite doors behind him.

On the bed, hidden beneath the thick white blankets, Lorenzo Moretti’s right hand clenched into a tight, brutal fist.
