Chapter 3 - The Secret Nurse

By midnight, the storm outside had escalated into a full gale. Heavy waves crashed against the rocky cliffs below the estate, the sound echoing through the thick stone walls like distant artillery.

In the small room in the servants' wing, Clara sat on the edge of her narrow twin bed, watching Mia sleep. The little girl was curled up under a thick wool blanket, her thumb tucked into her mouth, her tiny arms wrapped tightly around her stuffed rabbit.

Clara couldn't sleep.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Giorgio Moretti’s dark, hollow eyes. She remembered the subtle threat in his voice when he mentioned the steep ocean cliffs.

She knew men like Giorgio. Growing up in tough neighborhoods in Queens, she had seen enough dangerous men to know when someone was looking at you not as a person, but as a liability to be removed.

We have to leave, Clara thought frantically. First thing in the morning, I’ll pack our bags, tell Isabella I’m quitting, and take the early train back to Queens.

But then she remembered her bank account balance: forty-two dollars.

Her apartment in Sunnyside was gone, rented out to another family weeks ago. If she left this estate tomorrow, she and Mia would be living in a homeless shelter or sleeping on the cold benches of Penn Station.

A soft tap at her bedroom door broke her terrifying thoughts.

Clara jumped, her chest tightening. She reached for a brass candlestick on her nightstand, holding it like a weapon as she walked slowly toward the door.

"Who is it?" she whispered.

"Clara... it’s Elena. The night nurse," a quiet, weary voice answered from the hallway.

Clara hesitated, then unlocked the door and opened it an inch.

Elena Whitmore stood in the dim hallway. She was a woman in her late fifties, wearing dark navy nursing scrubs, her eyes lined with deep circles of exhaustion.

"Can I come in?" Elena asked softly. "It’s about your daughter. And Mr. Lorenzo."

Clara opened the door, letting the nurse inside, locking it quickly behind her. "Did Mia do something else? Is Mr. Moretti worse?"

"No," Elena said, taking a seat on the small wooden chair near the window. "Mr. Moretti’s vitals are completely stable. But I need to tell you something, Clara. Something no one else in this house knows."

Clara sat on the edge of her bed, watching the nurse nervously. "What is it?"

"I’ve been Lorenzo Moretti’s private ICU nurse for five years," Elena revealed, her voice dropping into a barely audible whisper. "When he was shot seven weeks ago, his doctors said he was brain dead. They said he would never wake up. But two weeks ago... when your daughter first snuck into his room and sang that song..."

Elena leaned forward, her eyes filled with an intense, desperate light.

"His brain waves changed, Clara," Elena whispered. "I was watching the secondary telemetry monitor in the alcove. The moment Mia began to sing, Lorenzo’s neurological activity spiked. His brain wasn't dead. He was in a deep coma, trapped in a dark loop. Your daughter’s voice brought him back."

Clara gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. "Mia? But... she’s just a child!"

"Children don't have guards, motives, or greed," Elena said softly. "Lorenzo knew everyone around him was waiting for him to die so they could divide his money. When he heard that innocent little voice singing about sunshine... he realized there was still something good left in the world worth fighting for."

Elena reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive, placing it on the bed between them.

"Giorgio is planning to kill him, Clara," Elena confessed, tears brimming in her eyes. "Giorgio bribed the chief physician to sign a do-not-resuscitate order two days ago. In forty-eight hours, Giorgio takes full legal control of the estate. The moment that paper is signed, Lorenzo will stop breathing."

"Why are you telling me this?" Clara cried softly, her voice filled with panic. "I’m just a maid! I wash dishes and fold laundry! I can't stop a crime boss!"

"You can," Elena said firmly, grabbing Clara’s hand with surprising strength. "Because Lorenzo trusts you and your daughter. And because Giorgio doesn't know that Lorenzo is awake inside his own head."

Elena looked toward the sleeping child on the bed.

"Your daughter saw something today, didn't she?" Elena asked. "She saw Giorgio in the library."

Clara felt a wave of icy terror wash over her. "She said... she said she saw him open a secret wall and take out a black box and a metal tube."

Elena closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. "The silencer. Giorgio kept the evidence to blackmail the hitman he hired. That drive... that drive holds the key to saving Lorenzo’s life."

"How?" Clara demanded.

"Lorenzo needs a specific neurological stimulant—a heavy dose of an experimental drug called Neurexol," Elena explained quickly. "It can force a comatose brain past the paralysis threshold. I have the drug in the medical safe upstairs, but I can't administer it alone. If Giorgio’s men catch me, they will kill me."

Elena looked straight into Clara’s eyes.

"I need someone to watch the hallway while I give him the injection," Elena pleaded. "And if Lorenzo wakes up... he will need someone he can trust to help him reach the private elevator before Giorgio realizes he’s conscious."

Clara looked at the nurse, then turned her head to look at her sleeping daughter.

If she helped Elena, she was risking her life and Mia’s safety against one of the most dangerous men in New York. But if she did nothing, Lorenzo Moretti would be murdered, and Giorgio would eventually eliminate Clara and Mia to cover up what the little girl had seen in the library.

There was no running away. The trap had already closed around them.

Clara swallowed hard, her jaw setting into a line of quiet, stubborn determination—the same determination that had kept her going through her husband's funeral and three night jobs.

"What time?" Clara asked.

Elena smiled through her tears. "Tomorrow night at midnight. During the shift change."
