Chapter 4 - The Midnight Injection

The following night, the storm had cleared, leaving behind a bone-chilling cold that turned the estate’s vast gardens into a frozen, silent landscape.

At 11:55 PM, the estate was entirely quiet. The heavy velvet curtains were drawn across every window, and the long, marble-floored corridors were lit only by small, amber nightlights set into the baseboards.

Clara stepped out of her room in the servants' wing, dressed in dark clothes. She had locked Mia safely inside their bedroom, giving her a small tablet to watch cartoons with strict instructions not to make a single sound until Mommy returned.

Clara slipped quietly up the narrow wooden service stairs that led to the second floor. Her heart was beating so loudly in her ears she was certain the guards could hear it.

At the end of the long second-floor hallway, two broad-shouldered security guards in dark suits were sitting on leather chairs near the medical suite doors.

Clara pulled a small glass vial from her pocket—something Elena had given her twenty minutes earlier. It was a potent sedative mixed into two cups of hot, fresh coffee on a silver tray.

Clara took a deep breath, smoothed her apron, and stepped into the hallway, forcing a nervous, sweet smile onto her face.

"Good evening, gentlemen," Clara said softly, her voice remarkably steady. "Miss Isabella asked me to bring you some fresh coffee. She said it was going to be a very long night."

The two guards looked up, their eyes suspicious. The taller guard, a scarred man named Bruno, looked at the steaming mugs, then looked at Clara.

"Isabella sent this?" Bruno grunted.

"Yes, sir," Clara lied seamlessly. "She’s downstairs going over the inventory books. She noticed you two had been on duty for six hours without a break."

Bruno sniffed the air. The rich smell of fresh French roast coffee was undeniable. He reached out and took one mug, while the second guard took the other.

"Tell Isabella thanks," Bruno growled, taking a long, deep gulp of the hot liquid.

"I will, sir. Have a good night," Clara said, bowing her head respectfully and walking back down the hallway toward the service kitchen.

She stood in the dark alcove of the pantry, counting the seconds on her watch.

One minute... two minutes... three minutes...

By the fifth minute, she heard two heavy thuds echo down the corridor.

Clara peeked around the corner. Both guards were slumped forward in their leather armchairs, their heads resting against their chests, snoring loudly in a deep, chemically induced sleep.

Clara didn't waste a second. She sprinted down the hallway, pushed open the heavy doors of Lorenzo’s suite, and slipped inside.

Elena was already there, holding a large syringe filled with a clear, dense liquid. Her hands were shaking violently as she scrubbed Lorenzo’s forearm with an alcohol swab.

"The guards are out," Clara whispered frantically, locking the doors behind her. "How long do we have?"

"The Neurexol takes roughly three minutes to flood his central nervous system," Elena said, her voice tight with extreme tension. She inserted the needle into Lorenzo’s IV port and steadily depressed the plunger. "Once the drug hits his brainstem, he will either wake up completely... or go into massive cardiac arrest. It’s an all-or-nothing gamble, Clara."

They stood over the bed, watching the cardiac monitor in agonizing silence.

Beep... beep... beep...

For ninety long seconds, nothing happened.

Then, suddenly, the monitor went wild!

BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP!

The green line spiked into violent, erratic peaks. Lorenzo’s chest heaved upward beneath the blankets as if he were being shocked with defibrillator paddles! His jaw clenched tightly, his neck tendons standing out like steel cables!

"His blood pressure is skyrocketing!" Elena gasped, reaching for an oxygen mask. "He’s going into neurological shock!"

"Lorenzo!" Clara cried out, stepping up to the bed, entirely forgetting her own fear. She reached down and grabbed his large, icy hand, squeezing it with all her strength. "Lorenzo, listen to me! You have to wake up! You have to fight! Your brother is going to kill you, and he’s going to hurt my daughter! Please... wake up!"

Suddenly, the violent shaking stopped.

The cardiac monitor settled back into a fast, strong rhythm.

Lorenzo’s hand, holding Clara’s fingers, suddenly squeezed back with terrifying, crushing force.

Clara gasped in shock.

Slowly, agonizingly, the long, dark eyelashes fluttered.

And then, Lorenzo Moretti opened his eyes.

They were deep, piercing, steel-gray eyes, filled with an ancient, burning rage that made the breath catch in Clara’s throat. He looked up at the ceiling, taking a long, ragged breath through his nose, his lungs expanding as if he were emerging from the depths of a dark ocean.

He turned his head slowly, his eyes locking onto Clara’s face.

"Clara..." a low, rasping voice came from his throat—dry, gravelly, but carrying an unmistakable authority that commanded absolute obedience.

"You're... you're awake," Clara sobbed, tears spilling down her cheeks.

Lorenzo closed his fingers tightly around hers, his steel-gray eyes blazing with lethal purpose.

"Where... is my brother?" Lorenzo asked.

Before Clara or Elena could answer, the heavy double doors of the suite were suddenly kicked open with a deafening crash!
